April GlossyBox

GlossyBox is a monthly subscription box for beauty items. Each month GlossyBox will send a box of 5 beauty products in a pink reusable box. I mention the box because it's very sturdy with minimal branding on it and can be reused for a multitude of things. I've reused them for packing gifts, storing jewelry and beauty items.

Price: $21 a month with discounts for 6 and 12 month subscriptions.

When I signed up I used a promo code which brought it down to about $15 a month.

The Good:

Brands: Well known luxury brands including OPI, Crabtree & Evelyn, Sebastian, Too Faced, etc.

Sizes: deluxe sample size and usually 1 or 2 full size items.

The Box: I love the box the items come in!

Information: They provide information on each product with price.

Free Stuff: You can earn GlossyDots for reviewing items in the box and referrals. One you get enough GlossyDots you can redeem them for a free box.

The Not So Good:

Price: The price is a little high but they do send higher end products.

Skip: There is no option to skip.

April GlossyBox

Contents of the GlossyBox:

FULL SIZE Unani Dermo Defense Face Mask. Value = $18.00

FULL SIZE Leighton Denny Expert Nails nail polish in pillow talk. Value = $19.00

FULL SIZE Not Your Mother's Haircare Sea Salt Spray. Value = $3.00

FULL SIZE Studio 10 Brow Lift Perfecting Liner. Value = $20.00

.14 oz. Biossance The Nourisher, Precious Rose Face Oil. Value = $10.14

The total value of the GlossyBox is $70.14. Summer is definitely on the horizon. It seems all the boxes lately have a summer theme. Nail polish, sea salt spray, face moisturizer, etc. The eyebrow liner is kind of a odd ball item though. I've never been successful with eyebrow liners. To me they always look fake and drawn on. I much prefer the brow stuff that looks like mascara. I did think it was cool that this had light and dark colors in one pencil though. I'm a big fan of face masks and have never heard of this brand but I'm willing to give it a try. I've very curious about the face oil because a full size bottle is $72!

Verdict: This box was definitely a summer box. Totally worth the $15 I paid with the discount.

April PopSugar Must Have Box

Contents of box with approximate retail price:

Chrissy Teigen's Cravings Recipe Book. Value = $29.99

Canvas Home Tinware Salt & Pepper Shakers. Value = $12.00

Next by Nature Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans.  Value = $3.99

Farmacy Sleep Tight Firming Night Balm. Value = $48.00

Noon Design Shop "Lemons" Flour Sack Tea Towel. Value = $18.00

Royal Apothic Field Poppy hand cream. Value = $24.00

Special Extra

Bloom That Gift Card $20.00. Value = $00.00

The value of this box is $135.98. Like last month I just haven't been overly excited about the PopSugar boxes. Of course I thought the espresso beans were delicious and I'll probably find some recipes I can use in the cookbook. Side note, there is no nutritional information on the recipes in the book which is a big bummer for me. The tea towel is pretty but I have a ton so I'll probably save this for a gift. I'll definitely use the hand cream and maybe the night cream. Although cute I don't have a use for the salt and pepper shakers. Maybe that can be a gift also.

Verdict: This months PopSugar had some nice items but I wasn't overly excited about the box.

OuiPlease Volume 2.1: La Vie En Ros

The OuiPlease is a box full of Parisian treasures that ships 6 times a year. The price of the box is quite high at $150 per shipment. Every now and then they have a 20% off code that can be used on yearly subscriptions and brings the price down to $520 or $87 a box. The catch is you have to pay the full amount upfront which is a lot to shell out for a subscription box.

Price: $108-$150 every two months depending on subscription commitment.

The Good:

Luxury products: The boxes are filled with name brands that would be considered luxurious.

Variety: This box isn't just beauty products. It will have jewelry, apparel, home goods, etc.

Information: They include their own magazine that talks about the products in the box as well as other products.

Pricing Structure: They offer one-time, monthly or yearly subscriptions. It would be nice to see a 6 month (3 box) subscription tier.

The Not So Good

Price: The price is way high but at the same time you will hopefully get what you pay for.

Referrals: I would like to see a referral program. If you can convince someone to spend this much money on a box you should get a little thank you treasure.

Each box comes in a bigger box and when you open it this is what it looks like.

This is the box that holds all the treasures. It's a really sturdy reusable box.

OuiPlease 2.1

Contents of the Volume 2.1 OuiPlease Box:

(2) Le Chocolat des Français Chocolate Bars. Value = $7.50/ea.

Kusmi Tea in organic green rooibos. Value = $20.20

The value of this box is $304.20. I forgot to take a close up picture of the bracelet. It's a really dainty and adjustable. I was really hoping the La Fare item would be more rosemary foot cream because that stuff was awesome! I love rooibos tea and chocolate so I was happy about both of these items. The scarf is really pretty and I love that it's an exclusive but I was really hoping for the clutch because I think I would use that more. Of course the chocolate bars were good because well it's chocolate.

Verdict: It's a lot of money but it definitely has value.

If you sign up yearly it's $110 which brings the price down the $9.16 a month with shipping included.  I've been with them since 2011 and this is one subscription I am for sure keeping. April ipsy bag

Contents of ipsy bag w/approximate value:

Pur~lisse Blue Lotus + White Tea Mask. Value = $8.00

Pur~lisse Blue Lotus + Seaweed Mask. Value = $8.00

1.02 oz. Ren Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream. Value = $27.10

Luxie Dreamcatcher Tapered Highlighter Brush 522. Value = $10.00??

Starlooks Cream Eye Shadow in Rose Gold.  Value = $12.00??

.5 oz. Tarte LipSurgence Lip Cream in Wonder. Value = $12.00

makeup bag with a tie dye pattern.

The approximate value of this months bag is $67.10. I was thrilled to see the put~lisse masks in this bag. I so love using face masks! I'm kind of overloaded with makeup brushes right now so I think I'll put this one in the trade pile. I haven't tried it yet but the color of the eyeshadow is really pretty. I can't wait to use it. The day cream looks like a high end product but I'll probably use it at night since it doesn't have SPF protection.

Verdict: I'm happy with this bag. I will all but one item in the bag.

April Cricut Mystery Box

Cricut is a personal electronic cutting machine used in card making, scrapbooking, and crafting of all types. Cricut started selling mystery boxes which when they contain the cartridges or supplies and they are a terrific value! The cartridges that are needed to use the machine run anywhere from $20-$50 a piece and if you have a cricut you always need supplies like paper, vinyl, etc. As you can see, adding to your collection of cartridges can add up quick.

This month Cricut has a premium mystery box. The difference between the premium and regular is price and product. They usually have more cartridges. This one says the value is $175.93.

Sorry for the glare. I had the windows open since it was such a nice day.

Pens in the mystery box.

Contents of box with prices from the Cricut website listed.
The first price is the regular price and the second price is the sale price listed.

Cricut Simple Everyday Cards cartridge. Value = $29.99/$19.99

Cricut Create a Friend cartridge. Value = $29.99/$19.99

Cricut Summer Soirée cartridge. Value = $29.99/$19.99

Cricut Creepy Critters cartridge. Value = $29.99/$19.99

Cricut Anna's Lovely Layered Cards cartridge. Value = $29.99/$19.99

Cricut Explore Pen Set in Black. Value = $14.99/$8.99

Cricut Explore Southwest Pen Set. Value $12.99/$7.79

The total value of this box is $177.93 or $116.73 using current prices. I still think they should use current pricing and not regular price since that is what you would be paying if you bought them from their website. I was super excited to get the pens because I recently bought a Cricut Explore and it uses these pens. I'm still now 100% clear on how to use them with the machine but now I'm prepared. Also exciting was that I didn't have any of these cartridges!

Verdict: If you are into Cricut and don't have a lot of cartridges or supplies the mystery boxes are great deal.

April Target Beauty Box

It used to be that every now and then Target put together a box of goodies and offered them for $5-$10.00 each. It seems they are coming more frequently now but it's still available on a first come first serve basis. Once they go on sale they are sold on a first come first serve basis and they sell out quick! The other nice thing about this box is they tell you what you are getting prior to ordering. This box was priced at $7.00 with shipping included.

The Good:

Price: You can't beat the price!

Contents: They tell you what's in the box before you order.

Like the products: They even include a coupon for $3 off a purchase at Target.

The Not So Good:

Goes Fast: This sells out super fast so you have to order quick.

Random: The boxes have no set schedule so you never know when they are going to be available.

April Target Beauty Box

Verdict: It seems like this is becoming a monthly box. I hope they make it a subscription soon.

April Birchbox - Rifle Paper Co.

Birchbox is a monthly subscription service for beauty items like makeup, skincare, fragrance, etc.  Each month you will receive 4-5 generously sized samples and sometimes full size beauty products.  The cost of this service is $10 w/shipping included.  They also have a yearly subscription which is $110 for the year bringing the cost down to $9.16 a month.

I resubscribed to this because I came across a Cyber Monday deal which made a yearly subscription $88.69 which breaks down to 7.39 a month. I figured that was a pretty good deal.

Price: $10 a month or $110 a year pre-paid.

This subscription is available in the US only.

The good:

Name Brands. You will receive items from department store/beauty store brands.

Cost.  For $10 you can give yourself a little beauty treat.

Like surprises?  You don't know what's in your box until you receive it.  When you sign up you take a little quiz and the items in the box are supposed to be customized to you.  I have seen pictures of other peoples boxes and they do receive different items.

Discounts: They have a system where you earn points for referrals and things you buy.  The points allow you to receive discounts on future full size purchases from their shop.  They offer free shipping on items from the monthly box and a $5 flat shipping rate for items that don't qualify for free shipping.  This is a nice feature because if you want to order several different brands you get free or $5 shipping for everything.

Need a gift? You can gift a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription or you can purchase a gift card in any amount.  There also have a nice option with the gift subscriptions where you can choose to have the 1st box shipped you for giving and subsequent boxes will be shipped directly to the recipient.  Great birthday/holiday gift!

The not so good:

Skip a month?  Currently there is no option to skip a month only cancel.

April Birchbox

Contents of box with approximate retail price/value listed.

1.7 oz. Marcelle Micellar Solution. Value = $3.57

.17 oz. Dr. Jart+ Contour Cream. Value = $6.00

.04 oz. Laura Gellar Baked Blush. Value = $8.00

1 oz. Parlor Volumizing lift spray. Value = $4.90

1 oz. Tocca Giulietta Hand Cream. Value = $5.00

The total value of this box is $27.47. I am really looking forward to the items in this box this month. I don't use blush much but I like blush that comes in containers like this. I can just swipe it on my cheeks and brush to blend. The hand cream is nice and light without a strong scent. The contour cream is some sort of anti-aging something or other. I figure using it can't hurt anything. I think the micellar is a combo cleanser and toner. It says it removes makeup and you don't rinse off. Seems strange to not rinse it off but I'll try it.

The verdict: This box was a good one for me.

Wednesday, April 13, 2016

April Dermstore BeautyFIX Box

The BeautyFIX by Dermstore is a monthly subscription box for beauty items. Each month Dermstore will send out a BeautyFIX box filled with skin care, makeup and hair care with a value of at least $100. The price on the website shows $34.95 but if you sign up for a monthly subscription the price is $24.95. Both prices include shipping. Also if you subscribe your first month is half price making it $12.48 for your first box.

Price: $24.95-$34.95 a month with no option to skip.

Ships to US only, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico additional shipping charges apply.

The good:

Price: They send great products with a value of at least $100 that's 3-4 times the price of the box.

Want more: Since they have a retail website reordering is easy and all these products were easily found.

Referrals: If you refer someone that person gets $10 off a purchase of $30 or more and you get $10.

Discount: They offer a discount if you want to purchase an item from your box.

The not so good:

Price: This is one of the higher priced subscriptions but the products are usually high end.

Skip: Their website is not user friendly.  I couldn't find an option to skip or cancel.

Referrals: It's not a clickable link for referrals. You have to send an invite via email.

April BeautyFIX Box

Contents of BeautyFIX w/approximate retail price from Dermstore listed:

FULL SIZE SmartFX Volume Extend Mascara. Value = $20.00

Patchology Flashpatch Eye Gels. Value = $2.00

1 oz. Klorane Dry Shampoo w/oat milk. Value = $6.25

.35 oz. Cotz Face SPF40 Value = $4.70

.17 oz. Bliss Drench N Quench moisturizer. Value = $3.80

.17 oz. Skinceuticals Triple Lipid Restore. Value = $?

FULL SIZE Juice Beauty Green Apple moisturizer. Value = $45.00

.17 Ahava Dead Sea Facial Serum. Value = $12.00

FULL SIZE Perfect Formula Pink Gel Coat. Value = $8.00

The total value of of this BeautyFIX box is $101.75. The BeautyFIX boxes are always a mix of things I will use and things I won't use. I always get my money's worth though. I love taking eye gels when I travel. I tend to get puffy eye and these help tremendously. The nail gel coat will come in handy when I want a little color but don't have time to fully paint my nails. I still haven't gotten behind the dry shampoo movement but I know a lot of people use it so I'll trade or gift it. The full size juice beauty moisturizer was a nice bonus.

Verdict: Great box for full size and high end products.

April PopSugar Mini Subscription Box

The PopSugar Must Have Mini Subscription has shipped it's first box! The mini box will contain 2 awesome full size products that will compliment the theme of the full size PopSugar box but at half the price. The price of this box is $18.95 (shipping included) and each box has a promised MSRP value of $30.

I signed up for this box right away because I love my full size PopSugar Box. I noticed today it said the next mini box would ship in July. I thought this was a monthly box but now I'm wondering if it's quarterly. I searched their FAQ's but couldn't find the answer.
Price: $18.95 a month.

This subscription is available in the US only and ships from Gilroy, Ca.

The good:

Products: 2 full size products including a variety of beauty, home etc.

Booklet: The include an info booklet in each box about the products including the value.

Price: This box is under $20 a month which is a good price point for a monthly box.

The not so good:

So far this is a great box.

Contents of box with approximate retail price:

Greenmarket Purveying Co. in White Melon Pantry Candle. Value = $16.00

Farmacy Lip Bloom lip balm in Strawberry Basil. Value = $16.50

The value of this box is $32.50. I didn't find this box overly exciting but if anyone remembers the first PopSugar Box from August 2012 it was also not as exciting as people had hoped. With that being said I do LOVE the scent of the candle. The melon scent is exactly on point. I like the idea of the strawberry basil lip balm but I don't lip balms where I have to dip my finger in the pot. If this were in a tube I would be all over it.

Verdict: This inaugural PopSugar Mini Box was not that exciting but did hit the promised value of $30 and I'm looking forward to the next box.

MightyNest is a website that sells natural, organic and non-toxic products. Basically they have done all the research for you. They also have a monthly subscription box called The MightyFix. In addition your MightyFix box is guaranteed to have a value of at least $10 and they are not samples but full size products. There really is a lot of cool stuff on the website so if you get a chance check it out.

I like this box so much that I ended up subscribing yearly.

Price: $10 a month. Available in the US only and ships from Evanston, Illinois.

The Good:

Full Size: The items sent are NOT samples. They are full size items and things that are sold in their online shop.

Donation: 15% of every purchase, including the subscription box goes back to a school of your choice.

Gift: Need a gift? They offer 3, 6, or 12 months subscriptions.

The Not So Good:

You might end up with a product you don't need.

March MightyFIX box

Contents of the MightyFix box:

New Zealand wool dryer balls. Value = $19.99

The total value of this box is $19.99. I'm actually looking forward to giving these a try. I have an energy efficient dryer but if I can be more efficient by tossing these balls in the dryer then even better. The best part about these is you can just leave them in the dryer. On the included postcard it always says you can add a couple drops of essentials oils to them if you want a nice scent to your clothes.

Verdict: These looks awesome!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise

ModCloth is an online store that is filled with fun, unique, retro and awesome clothing in a wide range of styles and sizes. They also have shoes, gifts and things for your home. I love ModCloth and have been shopping with them for a few years. They are very descriptive in their clothing which helps when trying to find the right size. I've only had to return a few items due to sizing but their return policy and process is very easy to navigate.

Every few months or so, usually seasonally ModCloth puts out what's called a Stylish Surprise box. Each item is $20 and it's a mystery as to what you will get. They offer boxes for dresses, clothing (includes everything but dresses), home, accessories and shoes.

I've been 50/50 on the boxes but the things I do love are great. The things I don't love so much I sell to friends or put on eBay. If I can get the price I paid back then I'm a happy camper. You can also list unwanted items on the MSA swap site since this is mystery box.

I used stock photos because they look way better than any picture I can take.

Fuzzy-Ink Hot Air Baleen Tee                                      Steven Madden Diagonal Alley jacket in olive.

RockSteady Bugle Joy Skirt                                                IXIA No Place Like Cone Dress

Yellow Star Shine of The Times Dress                               Modcoth Presentation Perfection Dress

Contents of the Stylish Surprise Box:

Fuzzy-Ink Hot Air Baleen Tee. - Original retail price: $29.99 was on sale for $8.99 but now sold out.

Steven Madden Diagonal Alley jacket in olive - Original retail price: $139.99 currently on sale for $55.99 and available in sizes small, medium and large.

RockSteady Bugle Joy Skirt - Original retail price: $54.99 was on sale for $16.99 but now sold out.

IXIA No Place Like Cone Dress - Original retail price: $79.99 was on sale for $23.99 but now sold out.

Yellow Star Shine of The Times Dress - Original retail price: $79.99 was on sale for $23.99 but now sold out.

Modcoth Presentation Perfection Dress - Original retail price: $79.99 was on sale for $23.99 but now sold out.

I paid $129.00 for this box after taxes which worked out to $21.50 per item. If I paid full price for these items it would've been $464.94. All of these items were on sale at one point and if I found them on sale in my size I would've paid $191.94. I was pretty excited about this box because I loved everything in it which was a first for me. Usually I get a couple of items I'm not too excited about. All of these items were on sale at one point but I couldn't tell you when. The bummer part is two of the items didn't fit. I love the Hot Air Baleen tee and it says it's a xxlarge but I swear it's more  like a large. I even checked the tags to see if they sent the wrong size. There is no chance of this shirt ever fitting me. The other item that didn't fit was the bugle joy skirt. I'm going to hold on to this item though because I've been low carb eating and I'm hoping to fit into it soon. The other item I'm iffy about but only because I live in California is the jacket. I absolutely love the jacket and had been eyeballing it on their website. I never bought it though because I have a closet full of jackets that I never wear because it doesn't get cold enough in California. I LOVE this jacket though! The dresses are absolutely perfect and they fit! I can't wait to wear them, especially the ice cream cone one. How perfect for summer.

Verdict: I love the stylish surprise boxes - even if they don't work out perfect every time.

Buy: I really want them to have a shop on their website where you can purchase more spices you like.

Contents of the RawSpiceBar envelope:

.1g. packet Saffron Threads.

.3 oz. packet Afghan Pulao Spices.

.3 oz. packet Afghan Lamb Rub.

One of the best parts of this subscription is the included recipes. They include ingredients that are easily found at the grocery store.

The recipes are:

Afghan Kabuli Pulao.
Ginger Saffron Tea.
Afghan Marinated Lamb.

I'm not a lamb fan but I think I can substitute pork. I was excited about the Saffron. It's one of the most expensive spices in the world. It's what adds the beautiful yellow color to paella.

Verdict: I think this is a great subscription and I'm really enjoying the new spices.

A Beautiful Mess Mystery Box

A Beautiful Mess has two subscription boxes. The first box is called Happy Mail and contains $50 worth of stationary products including note pads, stickers and journals. Messy box contains one-of-a-kind goodies like stickers, patterned paper, and things to personalize photo books. The Happy Mail box is $20 month w/a discount for 6 and 12 month subscriptions. The Messy box is $24.99 a month w/a discount for 6 and 12 month subscriptions. Both prices include shipping.

Every once and a while they offer a mystery box of products containing items from each box. The price of the mystery box is $10 plush $5 shipping. I had heard the mystery boxes were a pretty good deal so when this one came up I decided to order.

In order to show all the included cards I had to take 3 pictures.

First set of cards.

Second set of cards.

Stickers, a random envelope and gift tag.

This box had a mix of 13 postcards and regular cards with 3 sheets of stickers, a gift tag and a random envelope that didn't fit any of the included cards.

I was kind of disappointed in this box. I guess I expected this to have more stuff in it. If you break it down it's about 88 cents an item (not including the random envelope) and that's not too bad.

Verdict: This was ok but I probably wouldn't purchase again.
