January Hatchery Tasting Box

Hatchery is a subscription box for small batch food products from independent makers. This is always a great way to be able to try artisan type food products without ordering in large quantities. Each month you will get 5-6 products. The price of this box is $20 a month w/shipping included. I found a deal through Gilt for half off a 12 month subscription so each box cost me $10.

Price: $20 a month

This box is available to the US and Canada.

The good:

Variety: You get to try a variety of items without having to order from lots of places.

Not just food: They also included mixers for drinks!

Info: They product a booklet with info on each product/company.

Need a Gift: They offer 3, 6 and 12 month gift subscriptions.

Instructions: They include recipes and or uses for the products in the box.

Need More: They have a marketplace where you can shop your box!

The not so good:

Discounts: No discounts for long term subscriptions.

January Hatchery Box

Contents of the Hatchery Box:

2 oz. Best Friends Honey Smoked Pecan and Cinnamon Honey. Value = $2.50

1 oz. Rootz Sweet & Spicy Table Sauce. Value = $1.00

1.5 oz. White Church Co. Promiscuous Pinot Noir with Allspice & Cinnamon . Value = $3.00

10 ml Sweet is the Spice Cocoa Dulce. Value = $0.77

4 oz.? Fourth Creek Foods Sweet Red Pepper Relish. Value = $2.33

The total value of the Hatchery box is $9.60. This box had a disappointing value in my opinion. I only paid $10 for the box so it's ok for me but full price is $20. All of the products in this box are things I am definitely interested in trying. A few of these items I might save for our annual super bowl party and pair with some cheeses. Sounds a little fancy for super bowl but everyone loves cheese!

Verdict: I like the premise of this box but would like to see a higher value.

January Blue Apron Meal Delivery

Blue Apron is a weekly delivery service of fresh ingredients to make meals. I've tried it a couple of times and done price breakdowns to see if it's worth the money or should I just go to the store and buy the stuff myself. What I figured out is you're not getting an incredible deal as far as getting more value than you paid but you are getting convenience and it doesn't cost much more than if you went and bought all the stuff yourself.

Blue Apron (named after the blue aprons apprentice chefs in France used to wear) sends fresh ingredients to make 3 meals that will serve 2-6 people each week. This is how is works. Once you sign up you can choose to receive meat and fish or vegetarian dishes and you choose how many servings (2,4 or 6) you want for each dish. You will receive 3 meals per week with enough ingredients for the servings you request. The prices vary depending on what you order. For 2 people it's $59.94, 4 people is $119.88 and 6 people is $179.82 per week with shipping included. This works out to $9.99 per meal per person. It's less than going to a restaurant but may more than going to the grocery store and getting the ingredients yourself. They send out the menus weekly and you can also log on to your account and skip deliveries 6-8 weeks in advance. I went into my account and skipped all the weeks because I would rather skip and miss something than forget to skip and get something I don't want. I can't justify getting this every week so I look at our calendar to see what kind of week is coming up and if the menu looks good and it's a busy week I will unskip the week. If it's not a busy week, the menu isn't my thing or we are going to be out of town I leave it as skipped.

Price: $60.00-$180 a week depending on size of box. Option to skip weeks.

The good:

Busy: This is great for busy people. The ingredients are fresh, on hand and the meals take on average 35 min to prepare.

Don't cook?: The included recipe cards are not only beautiful they have very easy to follow instructions complete with pictures.

Counting Calories: The calorie info is included and each meal is 500-700 per serving.

Ingredients: fresh ingredients from artisan purveyors with an emphasis on sustainable practices

Need a specific delivery day: You can choose between Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and even Saturday delivery. Also the food is well packed on ice packs in an insulated box.

The not so good:

Price: It's a bit pricey but you're paying for convenience.

Seared Salmon & Salsa Verde with Orange, Spinach & Farro Salad ingredients above and finished meal below.

Korean Tteok & Spicy Pork "Ragu" with baby bok chop ingredients above and finished meal below.

Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with endive and blue cheese salad ingredients and finished meal.

Seared Salmon & Salsa Verde - This was way tastier than expected. The salad was very good and the salsa verde was amazing. I'm saving this recipe to make again

Korean Tteok & Spicy Pork "Ragu" - I love Korean rice cakes. They are like little wafers of pasta. This meal was like a Korean version of southern home cooking. I would make this again for sure!

Buffalo Chicken Sandwich - This was pretty good although the buns were not the right buns for this in my opinion. They were the small soft hamburger buns that squish too much when eating a saucy burger.

I'm not going to do a complete price breakdown like I did on my first review. If you want to read it click here. For me, I feel like there is value in these meals and they are working out great for those busy weeks. I logged into my account and skipped all weeks. When Blue Apron sends out the email with the menu information I can simply go back into my account and unskip. This works for me and I'm less likely to get a shipment I didn't want.

***Blue Apron has sent me invitations to share with 3 people. If you're interested in trying it Blue Apron will send you 1 weeks worth of meals which consists of 3 meals with 2 servings each. When you accept the invitation you will have to provide a credit card and will be signed up for their service. You can keep the service as is or go into your account like I do and skip the meals ahead of time, or cancel completely. If you are interested in trying it send me an email at I will update this post when the meals are claimed.***

Verdict: I'm enjoying the food and flexibility of this subscription.

January PopSugar Must Have Box

This bin needed it's own pic because it's so big. I put the chapstick in the pic for scale.

Contents of box with approximate retail price:

Pehr Designs Pebble Speck Bin. Value = $40.00

Spark Joy by Marie Kondo book. Value = $18.99

Pathology FlashMasque Trio.  Value = $20.00

Blue Sky Day Designer Weekly Planner. Value = $15.99

Not Soap, Radio Bath & Shower Gel Gift Set. Value = $22.00

Project 7, INC Summer Snow Sugar Free Gum. Value = $1.99

Special Extra

ChapStick Total Hydration 100% Natural Soothing Vanilla. Value = $2.99

The value of this box is $121.96. I saw spoilers with a picture of the bin but I didn't realize it was so huge! I love it. I was going to put my fur babies toys in it but it seems too nice for a toy bin. Maybe I will see if anyone is trading theirs. I was really disappointed they sent the planner in the month of January. I feel like this wouldn't been way better to get in December then it could have been gifted or used on the first of the year. I personally don't use planners like this but I love the Tiffany blue color. I will for sure use the shower gel mask set. I am very much looking forward to reading the Spark Joy book. I have a tendency to "collect"things but I've been working on it. Maybe this book will give me some good ideas.

Verdict: This months PopSugar was cool. I love the bin and really the only thing I won't use is the planner.

January Atlas Coffee Club - subscription giveaway!

Atlas Coffee Club is a monthly subscription for, wait for it, coffee. This isn't just any run of the mill coffee though, this is special coffee. What makes Atlas Coffee Club so special? Their coffee is globally sourced from a single origin and they pay above market price for the beans helping to ensure ethical sustainable farming practices. They also roast the beans the same week they ship to ensure freshness. The price of this subscription is $19.95 a month for a 12 ounce bag of coffee. Each additional bag, up to 3 is an additional $19.95

Price: Starting at $19.95 a month with discounts for 6 and 12 month subscriptions.

This package was sent to me complimentary for review. This is package is priced at $39.90 a month.

The good:

Fresh: They roast the beans the same week they ship.

Sustainable Farming: They pay the farmers above market price for the beans.

Choice of ground or whole bean coffee

Need a gift: They offer 3, 6 and 12 month gift subscriptions

Info: They send a card with information about from the brewers, growing region, how to brew and info about the coffee itself.

The not so good:

Price: This is a little pricey if you're not a coffee connoisseur or are just a plain ol Folgers kind of person.

Atlas Coffee Club

Contents of the Atlas Coffee Club box:

12 oz. bag of ground coffee from Costa Rica

12 oz. bag of ground coffee from Ethiopia.

It's hard to place a value on this because of all the goes into it. It's a single origin bean, fresh roasted and comes with a wealth of information. I did a little poking around on the Internet and it seems this is about average for this type of subscription. I'll be completely honest and just say that I am not a coffee connoisseur. I have a regular drip coffee maker and I drink everything from Folgers to 100% Kona coffee from Maui. The information card even included which type of brewing method to use of which I had neither. Again I'm not a coffee connoisseur but I thought this coffee was really good, even in the regular drip coffee maker. I thought the Costa Rica coffee was a little strong (more than I'm use to) and the boyfriend found it a little light. I thought the Ethiopia coffee was just perfect, very mellow but tasty.

The good people at Atlas Coffee Club are giving away a 3 month subscription!! How awesome is that. Don't delay, enter today!

Verdict: If you want to treat yourself to a special coffee once a month give this a try. I personally am thinking I know of a couple of people this would make a great gift for!

January Bestowed Box

Bestowed was created by nutritionist and author Heather Bauer in an effort to answer the question everyone had when it comes to health food.."which one of these is really the best?" Each month, Heather and her team of health and diet experts carefully curate 7-10 healthy snacks, beverages and lifestyle item and send them to you. The not so good:

January Bestowed Box.

Contents of box with approximate retail value:

Yogi Detox Tea bag. Value = $0.31

PrepDish coupon for $10 off a one month subscription. Value = $0 - This requires an out of pocket expense of $4.00

The total value of this months box is $11.19. These boxes seem to always have a low value. It's ok for me because I'm able to purchase them at a discount but if I were paying the full price of $20 I would be upset. I am looking forward to trying a few of the items in this box. I was thinking the other day that I hadn't made anything with tofu in awhile, then this tofu arrived in my mail. This brand is new to me so that will be fun to try. The dark chocolate bars were delicious AND I saw that they have 8g of fiber in each piece. Healthy and delicious! I have a protein drink that I'm really partial to but if I remember correctly I did like the Tera'swhey powder mix.

Verdict: This box had just terrible value but some interesting new products to try.

Love to cook: If you love cooking with new foods and spices this a fun way to do it.

Know someone who loves to cook: This makes a great gift!

The not so good:

Skip: I don't see an option to skip or pause your subscription.

Buy: I really want them to have a shop on their website where you can purchase more spices you like.

Sumac Carrot Salad with Almonds & Olives.

Just looking at the menu it doesn't look like something I would be too interested in trying. That is the point of this subscription is to try something new. Who knows I could be pleasantly surprised.

Verdict: I think this is a great subscription and I'm really enjoying the new spices.

If you sign up yearly it's $110 which brings the price down the $9.16 a month with shipping included.  I've been with them since 2011 and this is one subscription I am for sure keeping. They constantly have a high product value with products that I use.

Price: $10 a month with no option to skip. Discount offered for a yearly subscription.

This subscription is available to the US and Canada and ships from Harrisburg, NC.

The not so good:

Contents of ipsy bag w/approximate value:

1.01 oz. Mitchell and Peach Body Cream in English Leaf. Value = $6.55

FULL SIZE Hikari Cream Pigment eyeshadow in Mink. Value = $13.00

Beau Gachis Smudge-Tache. Value = $10.00

.24 oz. Pur-Lisse Blue Lotus 4-in-1 Eye Serum. Value = $32.50

Retro sunglasses makeup case.

The approximate value of this months bag is $79.05. I love the color of the eyeshadow and that it's not a powder. I haven't tried it on my eyes yet but Hikari hasn't failed me yet so I'm hoping it won't cake in the eye crease. I also love the color of the eyeliner and it compliments the eyeshadow perfectly. I can't believe how expensive the eye cream is. Why is eye cream so expensive in general? I was kind of bummed to see another makeup brush only because I have so many now. The great thing is I have enough to keep a second set in my travel bag.

Verdict: I thought this bag had some great products and a great value. Love the eye products!

.70 oz. re:p bio fresh mask w/real calming herb. Value = $6.31

.24 oz. IPKN Flash Cream Radiant Primer. Value = $4.34

TonyMoly Delight Tony Tint in Red. Value = $??

Manefit Beauty Planner Cucumber Soothing + Moisturizing Mask. Value = $2.00

.20 oz. Goodal Waterest First Essence. Value = $1.15

5ml. Goodal Yerba Mate Bubble Peeling. Value = $??

5ml. Goodal Yerba Mate Cleansing Foam Packets. Value = $0.67

The total value of this box is $14.47 not including the lip tint because I couldn't find a size on it. I don't really know what I was expecting from this box but I expected more or maybe different. The products are fine and things I will use but they just aren't that exciting. I think I also expected the value to be a little higher. I've heard of a few of these brands but I haven't used any of these products.

The verdict: This box was just ok.

January BeautyFIX Box

The BeautyFIX by Dermstore is a monthly subscription box for beauty items. Each month Dermstore will send out a BeautyFIX box filled with skin care, makeup and hair care with a value of at least $100. The price on the website shows $34.95 but if you sign up for a monthly subscription the price is $24.95. Both prices include shipping. Also if you subscribe your first month is half price making it $12.48 for your first box.

Price: $24.95-$34.95 a month with no option to skip.

Discount: They offer a discount if you want to purchase an item from your box.

The not so good:

Skip: Their website is not user friendly.  I couldn't find an option to skip or cancel.

Referrals: It's not a clickable link for referrals. You have to send an invite via email.

Contents of BeautyFIX w/approximate retail price from Dermstore listed:

Danielle Creations Chrome Mini Mirror w/4X magnification. Value = $14.99

.5 oz. June Jacobs Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque. Value = $7.50

Peter Thomas Roth Acne-Clear Invisible Dots. Value = $5.00

Arcona Magic White Ice moisturizer. Value = $??

FULL SIZE Medical Labs Hydrating Calming Facial Mist. Value = $13.95

FULL SIZE Tarina Tarantino Pearl Glow illuminating Primer in Pearl. Value = $32.00

DS Laboratories Revita LT High-Performance Hair Stimulating Shampoo. Value = $36.50

Karina Age-Defying Hand Mask. Value = $8.00

The total value of of this BeautyFIX box is $117.94 not including the Arcona moisturizer. It doesn't have a size on it but a full size is 1.7 oz. and it's $42.00. I was excited about the magnifying mirror but it's only a 4x and I like a 10x or higher. I am very fortunate to not get pimples very often but I'll be honest now I kind of want one to see if the Peter Thomas Roth dots really work. Just a tiny one, maybe on the side of my face where no one can see it. I'm also excited to try the hand mask. I hope it works on my cuticles also. The DS labs shampoo looks super high tech. I didn't open it yet because I'm not sure I'm going to keep it. I don't have an issue with thin hair so I might trade it.

Verdict: This months a few new items for me to try and a great value.

January GlossyBox

GlossyBox is a monthly subscription box for beauty items. Each month GlossyBox will send a box of 5 beauty products in a pink reusable box. I mention the box because it's very sturdy with minimal branding on it and can be reused for a multitude of things. I've reused them for packing gifts, storing jewelry and beauty items.

Price: $21 a month with discounts for 6 and 12 month subscriptions.

When I signed up I used a promo code which brought it down to about $15 a month.

The Good:

Brands: Well known luxury brands including OPI, Crabtree & Evelyn, Sebastian, Too Faced, etc.

Sizes: deluxe sample size and usually 1 or 2 full size items.

The Box: I love the box the items come in!

Information: They provide information on each product with price.

Free Stuff: You can earn GlossyDots for reviewing items in the box and referrals. One you get enough GlossyDots you can redeem them for a free box.

The Not So Good:

Price: The price is a little high but they do send higher end products.

Skip: There is no option to skip.

January GlossyBox

Contents of the GlossyBox:

Emité Make Up Diamond Heart Base Primer. Value = $12.45

Royal Apothic Body Créme. Value = $14.00

2 oz. Beautiful Nutrition Lemon Rinse Gentle Clarifying Treatment. Value = $1.51

FULL SIZE MeMeMe Lip Glide in Playful Peach. Value = $12.50

1.7 oz. -417 Foot Nourishing Cream in Cutting Garden. Value = $8.00

The total value of the GlossyBox is $48.46. I am happy with this box. I've been trying to use foot cream every night to get my feet ready for pedicure season. I also curious to try the clarifying treatment, although I hope it's safe for colored hair. I probably won't use the lip pencil. I know people that use them say they are awesome but I just haven't got into it yet.

Verdict: I paid $15 for this box which I felt was a great deal for me.

Target Refresh Box

Every now and then Target puts together a box of goodies and offers them for $5-$10.00 each. It's similar to the WalMart box except this doesn't have a set shipping schedule and you can't subscribe. Once they go on sale they are sold on a first come first serve basis and they sell out quick! This box was priced at $7.00 with shipping included.

The Good:

Price: You can't beat the price!

Contents: They tell you what's in the box before you order.

Like the products: They even include a coupon for $3 off a purchase at Target.

The Not So Good:

Goes Fast: This sells out super fast so you have to order quick.

Random: The boxes have no set schedule so you never know when they are going to be available.

Contents of the Target Renewal Beauty Box:

1 oz. Acure Day Cream. Value = $9.71

FULL SIZE John Frieda Kereflex Hair Spray oz. Value = $8.99

2.7 oz. Nivea In-Shower Body Lotion. Value = $1.20

1.7 oz. Clear Total Care Shampoo. Value = $0.51

1.7 oz. Clear for Men Scalp Therapy Dandruff Shampoo. Value = $0.72

FULL SIZE Simple Micellar Facial Wipes. Value = $6.99

1 oz. Marlowe Extra Moisturizing Lotion. Value = $0.67

5 pack Nip+Fab Glycol Fix Pads. Value = $1.08

(2) Scunci elastic bands. Value = $0.96

Coupon for $3 off beauty purchase of $15 or more at Target.

The total value of this beauty box is $30.83. I love this box even more than the last one. The only item I won't use is the Nivea in shower body lotion. Honestly the stuff works but it makes the shower floor so slippery I'm afraid I'm going to go right through the glass doors. I will probably use the day cream at night since it doesn't have SPF in it. I'm very interested in the glycolic pads. I'm all about in home facials. I'm also curious about the Clear for men dandruff shampoo. What makes it for men? The color of the bottle? I'm going to use it anyway because winter tends to dry out my scalp. I used one of the scunci's already and it works great!

Verdict: Great deal for $7.00 and you know what you're getting before hand.

The total value of this beauty box is $33.79 if you only count one of the Laneige pots. I figure most people will only be able to use one of them. I am super excited about the braided headwrap. It's really made well and has non slip glue like stuff on it that hopefully won't pull on my hair. Getting a full size Degree anti-perspirant is cool except I can't use it because it has aluminum in it. Turns out my mom uses Degree so off to moms it goes. All of the other stuff are everyday items that I will definitely use.

Verdict: Great deal for $7.00 and you know what you're getting before hand.
