Back to School French Box

French Box came out September of 2014 and at first it was great. After a few months they started having issues with their box and unhappy subscribers. Instead of shutting down they stopped shipping, re-grouped, re-vamped and came back improved. One of the big changes is now the box ships every other month instead of monthly. They guarantee at least 5 products in each box but not always beauty items. They charge your card about a week before the box ships and you can cancel anytime.

I signed up for the box on May 20th. They don't charge your card until the box ships which is good. I wasn't sure when the next box would be but I guessed July since that was two months from May. I didn't hear any in July and then finally on August 10th I received an email saying my card was charged. I received tracking info on August 19th and the box arrived on August 24th.

Price: $36 every 2 months.

This is available to the 48 states (sorry Alaska and Hawaii) and ships from Miami Florida.

The good:

Foreign Beauty: If you are into French items that you might not be able to easily find in the US then this box is fun.

Variety: Not just beauty products, there was also food and home goods in the box.

Packaging: The box everything arrives in is really cute and worth keeping.

The not so good:

Skip: There is no option to skip, only cancel and re-sign up.

Price: It's on the higher side but they value is definitely there.

Unboxing Part I - Notebook, pen and postcard.

I didn't really know what "French Ruled" meant when it came to notebooks but I guess it looks like this. Seems like it would be hard to read.

Unboxing Part II - Cookies, Dry Body Oil

Unboxing Part III - Kitchen Towel

Unboxing Part IV - Panoramic photo of Notre-Dame at Dusk

Contents of the French Box

Clairefontaine French Ruled Notebook. Value = $5.00

BIC 4-Color ballpoint pen. Value = $4.00

Durance Dry Oil for Body.Value = $33.00

Pierre Biscuiterie Butter Biscuits. Value = $5.00

Torches Bouchons Paris Kitchen Towel. Value = $22.00

Notre-Dame at Dusk Panoramic Photo. Value = $8.00

The total value of this French Box is $77.00. I couple of weeks ago I received an email from French box with a link to choose which Durance product I wanted and which kitchen towel print I wanted. I thought that was super cool, except I didn't get either thing I picked. I understand it's a first come first serve kind of thing but I responded to the email within minutes of getting it. I love butter biscuits and I'm going to save these for Sunday coffee with the boyfriend. Lastly the photo of Notre Dame is nice but I'm not sure where I would put it. I like to decorate with photos I've taken on vacations or art I've purchased.

The big disappointment in the box is the BIC pen. Don't get me wrong this multi-color pens are color but nothing about it says French to me. Apparently they are very popular in France. Even though I didn't get the kitchen towel I wanted I still like this one very much. Also I had picked the body oil with fig extracts because I love figs but I received poppy instead. The poppy smells nice though so I'm ok with it.

Verdict: I only paid $14 for this box so it was worth it for me. I don't think I will be subscribing though.

August Bestowed Box

Bestowed was created by nutritionist and author Heather Bauer in an effort to answer the question everyone had when it comes to health food.."which one of these is really the best?" Each month, Heather and her team of health and diet experts carefully curate 7-10 healthy snacks, beverages and lifestyle item and send them to you. Bestowed has also partnered with The Food Trust and for each box sold they supply a kid in need with a days worth of snacks. The price of this box is $20.00 a month with shipping included. They also have 3 and 6 month plans that offer a 10-15% discount.

Bestowed offered this box to me for review for a discounted price of $10.00

Price: $20 a month w/no option to skip. Discounts for 3 and 6 months prepaid plans.

This subscription is only available in the US and ships from New York.

Bestowed is offering 10% off any subscription using code LOVEHEALTHY.

The good:

Variety: I liked that there was some variety to this box. It wasn't just limited to food or products, you get both!

Good size samples: The samples are full size or close to it.

Information: They include a sheet with product info and tips on usage.

The not so good:

Skip a month: I didn't see an option to skip a month.

August Bestowed Box.

Contents of box with approximate retail value:

1 oz. Mediterranean Snack Beanstalks. Value = $0.85

Kashi Cherry Cinnamon & Cardamom Overnight Muesli. Value = $3.99

Organic Slammers Snacks Superfood Snack. Value = $1.07

1.05 oz. Teeccino Dandelion French Roast. Value = $2.50

Teeccino Dandelion Dark Roast. Value = $0.52

Teeccino Dandelion Caramel Nut. Value = $0.52

eBoost Spruce Energizing Whole Greens. Value = $2.67

Follow Your Heart Vegenaise Coupon. Value = $9.00

.8 oz. Honey Stinger Kids' Organic Energy Chews. Value = $1.04

The total value of this months box is $13.16 or $22.16 if you include the coupon for the vegenaise. I've been wanting to try the vegenaise but it's so darn expensive! I'm happy with this box but the value is too low. Last month they included a coupon for free popsicles but I can't find the darn things anywhere which makes the coupon unusable for me. Luckily I know my store carries the vegenaise. All the other snacks I'm looking forward to trying.

Verdict: This box had some good products in it but the value could have been better.

August PopSugar Must Have

The PopSugar Must Have Box is a monthly subscription box that is geared toward many aspects of your lifestyle.  It includes, food, beauty, fashion, tech, and all kinds of other treasures. The price of the box is $39.95 a month w/shipping included.  They also have 3, 6 and 12 month subscriptions and each one saves you a little bit of money.

Price: $35.78-$39.95 a month depending on plan with no option to skip.

This subscription is available in the US only and ships from Gilroy, Ca.

The good:

Products: Full size products as promised and a nice variety of beauty, home etc.

Booklet: The include an info booklet in each box about the products including the value.

Pricing structure: They have monthly, 3, 6 and yearly subscriptions.  Each one (except monthly) saves you a little bit of money.

Referrals: The offer a generous referral program.  Refer 2 people get a month free. 5 people 3 months free and 10 people is 6 months free.  I've was super lucky and 10 people used my referral link so I got 6 months free way back when I first started subscribing.

The not so good:

The price: $40 is a little high for a monthly box but you do get some really cool stuff with a value of way more than $40

Skip a month: There is no option to skip, only cancel.

Max Referrals: They only reward you for the first 10 referrals. I think they're referral program is very generous but I would like to see something beyond 10 referrals. Maybe some type of point system or discount. ***The referral counts are being reset soon so you will get to refer people again if you've maxed out****

August PopSugar Box

Contents of box with approximate retail price:

American Colors Mediterranean Plaid Scarf. Value = $79.00

Royal Apothem Tea Balm Firming Eye Treatment. Value = $36.00

Pastel Best Day Every Mug. Value = $12.00

Happy Jackson Yay Lunch! Lunch Box. Value = $10.99

Southern Culture Shortstacks Pancake & Waffle Mix in birthday cake. Value = $7.99

Meri Meri Toot Sweet Pink Stripe Napkins. Value = $1.99

MyYogaWorks 3 -Month Trial. Value = $45.00

Special Extra!

Folgers Iced Café Caramel Macchiato Flavored Coffee Drink Concentrate. Value = $4.99

The value of this box is $197.96. It looks like scarf season is coming. Why are scarfs so expensive. I mean this is cute and all but $80. Really I don't know why they are priced so high. I love the lunch box but I'm disappointed that it's not dishwasher safe. The mug is not that exciting, hopefully I can trade it. I love the shortstack mixes. I've used them before and so far they have not disappointed. The napkins are really cut. I don't want to use them for everyday use so I'll have to put them away for a special occasion. The eye cream isn't all that exciting but I have heard tea works really well for dark circles and eye issues. I love cold coffee so I'm excited to try the coffee concentrate.

Verdict: This months PopSugar was pretty good.

August ipsy bag - Prep School

Ipsy bag sends out 4-5 samples and a makeup bag for $10 a month with shipping included. If you sign up yearly it's $110 which brings the price down the $9.16 a month with shipping included.  I've been with them since 2011 and this is one subscription I am for sure keeping. They constantly have a high product value with products that I use.

Price: $10 a month with no option to skip. Discount offered for a yearly subscription.

This subscription is available to the US and Canada and ships from Harrisburg, NC.

The good:

The samples: Usually you get at least one full size product in each bag.

The packaging: Each month the products come in a cute makeup bag for all your goodies.

Discounts: The almost always offer a discount on any additional purchases you want to make.

Semi-customized: You take a little quiz and your bag is semi-customized with products you will enjoy.

Points: You can earn points for reviews and referrals. You can redeem points for extra goodies in your bag.

The not so good:

Skip a month? There is no option to skip a month.  You have to cancel.

Renewal. If your a yearly subscriber they automatically charge your credit card for another year when the paid for year is up. I think they should sent out an email prior reminding you that your year is almost up and it will automatically renew.

August ipsy bag.

Contents of bag with value and approximate retail price:

1 oz. Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Blow Dry Spray. Value = $3.53

FULL SIZE Starlooks Pro Eyeliner Pen. Value = $19.00

Lord & Berry Nude Lip Liner. Value = $9.00?

FULL SIZE Hikari Lip Gloss in Salsa. Value = $13.00

1 oz. Oz Naturals Amino Herbal Hydration Mask. Value = $5.50

Black and White Make Up Bag.

The approximate value of this months bag is $50.03. I'm guessing on the price of the lip liner because it's smaller than the full size. I would guesstimate it's about half the size. I'm absolutely loving the makeup bag in the box this month. It's plastic which doesn't bother me and the design is sooo cute! I will use all the items in this bag except the lip liner. I gave that to a friend and when she swatched it I thought it was a really nice color but I probably still wouldn't use it.

Verdict: Great price and great box.

August Allure Beauty Box

The Allure Sample Society beauty box is a monthly service for beauty products that promises 5 fresh deluxe sized samples from luxury brands designed for multiple uses. The cost for this subscription is $15.00 a month with shipping included.

Price: $15.00 a month with no option to skip.

The good:

The samples: You get deluxe sized samples from luxury brands.

Magazine: You get a free 12 month subscription to Allure magazine.  If you already subscribe they will extend your subscription and if you don't want it you can mail in a form for a refund on the value ($12)

Coupon: They send you a coupon with each box for $15 off a $50 purchase. The catch is your order has to include at least one item from a brand you received that month.  It doesn't have to be the item you received just the same brand.

Referrals: It's a win/win. You get a $5 credit on your account or you can donate that to charity and the person you refer gets a 20% discount on their first purchase at Beauty Bar.

The not so good:

Skip a month: There is no option to skip a month, only cancel.

Allure Beauty Box

Contents of box with approximate retail value.

1 oz. Malin + Goetz Peppermint Shampoo. Value = $2.50

.265 Nuance Salma Hayek AM/PM Anti-Aging Super Cream. Value = $3.77

.5 oz. Bumble and Bumble Grooming Creme. Value = $3.00

.003 oz. Benefit They're Real Push-Up Liner. Value = $1.85

mini Butter London nail polish in Violet Revenge Value = $7.50

1.69 oz. Eau Thermale Avéne Cleanance Gel Cleanser. Value = $5.00

The total value of this box is $23.62. This isn't a super high value but with the exception of the push-up liner I will use everything in the box. I tried the push-up liner before and it was way too difficult to use. I think it's because it's a sample size and too small to get a handle on. I'm excited about the peppermint shampoo, I love the way minty stuff feels on my scalp. The cleanser is a good travel size. I have a full size version that I haven't tried yet which I can use to refill this bottle.

Verdict: This box was a good box for me.

Target Beauty Box

Every now and then Target puts together a box of goodies and offers them for $5-$7.00 each. It's similar to the WalMart box except this doesn't have a set shipping schedule and you can't subscribe. Once they go on sale they are sold on a first come first serve basis and they sell out quick!

Earlier this month Target had two back to school boxes and last week they put out another one. This newest one was priced at $7.00.

I'm not going to break down the good and not so good of this box since it's a one time purchase box. Also Target tells you what items and sizes are included so nothing is a surprise. Basically you know what you're getting when you buy the beauty box.

Target, Hello Sunshine Box

Contents of the Target Beauty Box:

FULL SIZE CoverGirl Super Sizer Mascara Lashblast. Value = $5.99

1.7 oz. Fekkai Pré-Soleil Hair Mist. Value = $6.80

FULL SIZE Hair Food Moisturizing Mask . Value = $11.99

.6 oz. Olay Active Botanicals Moisturizing Toner. Value = $1.80

.6 oz. Olay Active Botanicals Moisturizing Lotion. Value = $1.80

Crest 3D Whitestrips 1 hr Express. Value = $11.25

Coupon for $3 off beauty purchase of $15 or more at Target.

The total value of this beauty box is $39.63. I am super happy with this box. I couldn't believe how expensive the Crest whitestrips are. The regular ones aren't as expensive but I guess because these work in 1 hour they cost more? That product alone is worth the price of the box. I will definitely use the hair food and hair mist. I'm curious about both those products. I have tons of mascara but I just gave some away so I'll put this in my stash for now. The olay toner and lotion are good travel size and I have a few trips coming up.

Verdict: Great deal for $7.00 and you know what you're getting before hand.

Quarterly Co. Culinary Box

Quarterly Co. is a slightly different kind of subscription box company.  The way it works is you pick a contributor you would like to receive a curated gift from anywhere from $50-$100 and every 3 months you will receive your item in the mail from them.  With each gift you receive the story behind it. I used to subscribe to Andrew Zimmern and Food52 but canceled those after a few shipments and picked chef Ludo Lefebvre's box. I was happy with the Ludo box but then Quarterly decided to change things up a bit. The sent and email saying they were now going to have a culinary box which different curators every 3 months. The price would still be $50, the same as the Ludo box.

This months box was curated by Food52.

Price $50 every 3 months.

The good:

Variety: There are lots of different curators to choose from.

Something different: This is definitely different from other subscription companies

Commitment issues? Don't want to make a monthly commitment but still want a treasure?  You can get a quarterly treasure.

The not so good:

Don't like waiting: If you don't like waiting this may be torture for you.

Quarterly Co. Food52 curated box.

Contents of box with approximate retail price:

Zoku's Round Pop Molds. Value = $19.99

Heirloom Porcelain Berry Basket. Value = $16.00

2 oz. Royal Rose Lavender-Lemon Simple Syrup. Value = $3.83

6 oz. Royal Rose Raspberry Simple Syrup. Value = $11.50

Sucre Shop Popsicle Sticks. Value = $10.00

Recipes for making popsicles included.

The approximate value of this box is $61.32. I am very happy with this box because I've actually been wanting to try the pop molds but  never got around to buying one. I'm also glad they included mixers to use with it. I'm not sure why the extra popsicle sticks were included since the Zoku has built in sticks. I'm not even sure how I would use them with this. The berry basket is super cute but seems really breakable. I think instead of berries I'm going to use it as a candy dish.

Verdict: I'm happy with this box. Next shipment is curated by Andrew Zimmern.

August BetterBox

BetterBox is a new and very interesting subscription box. It contains tangible items for yourself but also items that will help you do activities that nourish your humanness. Basically this box is not just about you but it's also about giving to others. Each month the box will have theme and your activities will be centered around that theme.

Price: $29.00 a month w/discounts offered for 6 & 12 month plans. Shipping within the US is included in the price.

This subscription is available to the US and Canada (Add $5 shipping). Ships from Phoenix, Arizona

The Good:

Awareness: I think this is an interesting box because it's not just about getting items for yourself but it makes you aware of others.

Gift: Don't know what to get the person that has everything? Maybe this would be a great gift for them.

Skip: You can log onto your account and skip or cancel.

The Not So Good:

Price: The price is kind of high for a monthly subscription.

This is the included card that tells you what the box is about.

These are the items in the box that you will need to complete your daily actions.

Contents of the BetterBox:

Creativity Reflection Map

Acrylic Paint Set

Acylic Painting Papers

Mini Canvas and Easel

Magnetic Poetry Kit

Chiyogami Origami Paper

My Message to the World

Snooty Chefs Herbs de Poulet

This box is not one I can really put a value on. I can add up the items in the box but of course they aren't going to add up to $29.00. This is one of those boxes where the value is more than the items in the box.

When you receive your box you will be directed to a website where you will enter your name, email and code to get your first activity.

The 1st day activity said to perform the activities listed on the Creativity Mind Reflection Map. It had questions like Inspired: What people, places, acts or things inspire me? Childlike: How can I tap into the child-like energy of playfulness and joy? Release: What do I need to let go of in order to allow my full creative expression?

The 2nd day activity was a picture of 4 different scenes. You choose the picture that moved you the most. Once you clicked on the picture it said to contemplate what about that image inspires you. Share the image on Facebook with three words that are related to how it makes you feel.

The 3rd day activity instructed you to use your magnetic poetry kit and think of someone or something that moves you deeply. Then on your fridge construct a poem or sentence to express how you feel.

The 4th day was a quote by Maya Angelou. "Creativity. The more you use, the more you have"

The 5th day activity called for you to get the watercolor paints from the box and compose a piece of art composed entirely of different triangles.

The 6th day activity was to use your origami paper and make a drinking bird and leave it for a friend. They provided instructions to make the bird.

The 7th day was a quote from Edwin Land. "An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail."

That is a sample of a weeks worth of activities. It's kind of fun and really makes you take a step back and remember to have gratitude.

Verdict: This is a fun box. I think $30 a month is a little high though.

August Cricut Mystery Box

Cricut is a personal electronic cutting machine used in card making, scrapbooking, and crafting of all types. Cricut started selling mystery boxes which when they contain the cartridges are a terrific value! The cartridges that are needed to use the machine run anywhere from $20-$50 a piece. As you can see, adding to your collection of cartridges can add up quick.

The price of this months Cricut mystery box was $39.99 with free shipping using a code AUGSHIP. The box description is as follows:

The August Premium Mystery Box includes 4 premium cartridges and other mysterious things any crafter will enjoy. The contents are a mystery, but they're a $136.94 value!

This is still available so if you want one head on over to Cricut before they are gone.

August Premium Cricut Mystery Box

Mystery Box Cartridges

Contents of box with prices from the Cricut website listed.
The first price is the regular price and the second price is the sale price listed.

Cricut Poster Board, metallics. Value = $6.99/$4.66

Cricut Cake Cutting Mat. Value = $9.99

Cricut Pink Journey Cartridge. Value = $29.99

Cricut Creative Holiday Cards Cartridge. Value = $29.99

Cricut Bridal and Baby Soirées Cartridge. Value = $29.99

Cricut My Quiet Book Cartridge. Value = $39.99

The total value of this box is $146.94 or $144.61 using their current prices. I think this is the first box that actually met the promised value. I am excited about that but I'm even more excited that I don't have any of these carts.

Verdict: If you are into Cricut and don't have a lot of cartridges the mystery boxes with cartridges in them is a great deal.

Kiva - Free $25 Trial Loan

Have you heard about Kiva?  No it's not another monthly subscription, although you could make it into one and that would be a terrific thing.  Kiva is a non-profit organization that connects people through micro-lending.  Yes, I said lending. I know this doesn't sound like it's going to be a fun topic but here me out.  I'll  be quick.

The short story is Kiva works with micro-lending institutions on five continents to provide loans to people who don't have access to traditional banking systems.  Say a baker in Samoa needs a loan to purchase more supplies for her German Bun business.  She asks for a loan for $350 with a promise to pay it back within 14 months.  You can lend her any amount you want between $25-$350 and every month you will get a portion of your loan back until the whole amount you loaned is paid off.  This baker gets the needed supplies for her business and you helped.  How awesome is that!  This was an actual loan I made back in May 2009.  The $350 was funded by 10 of us and she repaid every cent back.  I often wonder how her business is doing.

I have been lending through Kiva since February 2008.  I started with $25 out of my pocket then when that was repaid I re-loaned it to someone else and continued with that cycle.  I have made 26 loans for a total of $650 with only about $100-$125 of actual out of pocket money.

The fun thing about Kiva is you can narrow down who, where or what type of business you want to loan to.  You can select by gender, location, industry or attributes.  Looking for a female in Jordan who wants money to expand her blanket making business? Lend to Juana from Bolivia, she is currently asking for $750 to purchase wool to sell more blankets.

For me lending money is just as addicting as subscription services.  I make it fun and tell people I have a goat farm in Kenya, a corn and rice farm in Ecuador,  and even a beauty salon in the U.S. (yes you can even loan to people in the U.S.). Of course I don't "have" these businesses but I like to think my $25 helped play a small role in helping these entrepreneurs expand and grow their business.

Right now Kiva is offering a free trial loan for new users. They will give you the $25 for you to loan all you need to do is sign up and pick your lendee. The money will go back into the Kiva account once it's paid back but you are welcome to put you own money in and lend again. You may just help change a life.

To get your free trial you must use my Kiva referral link.

August BeautyFIX Box

The Blush Beauty Mystery Box is now called BeautyFIX by Dermstore. I'm not sure why the name is changed but everything else seems to be pretty much the same. Each month Dermstore will send out a BeautyFIX box filled with skin care, makeup and hair care with a value of at least $100. The price on the website shows $34.95 but if you sign up for a monthly subscription the price is $24.95. Both prices include shipping. Also if you subscribe your first month is half price making it $12.48 for your first box.

Price: $24.95-$34.95 a month with no option to skip.

Ships to US only, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico additional shipping charges apply.

The good:

Price: They send great products with a value of at least $100 that's 3-4 times the price of the box.

Want more: Since they have a retail website reordering is easy and all these products were easily found.

Referrals: If you refer someone that person gets $10 off a purchase of $30 or more and you get $10.

Discount: They offer a discount if you want to purchase an item from your box.

The not so good:

Price: This is one of the higher priced subscriptions but the products are usually high end.

Skip: Their website is not user friendly.  I couldn't find an option to skip or cancel.

Referrals: It's not a clickable link for referrals. You have to send an invite via email.

August BeautyFIX Box

Contents of BeautyFIX w/approximate retail price from Dermstore listed:

FULL SIZE Alterna Daily Densifying Foam. Value = $36.00

Patchology Flashmasque Facial Sheet - Exfoliate. Value = $6.25

FULL SIZE Paula's Choice Clear Daily Skin Clearing Treatment. Value = $17.75

1 oz. Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash. Value = $3.58

FULL SIZE SmartFX Smart Eye Wrinkle Lift. Value = $60.00

1 oz. Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo. Value = $3.75

1 oz. Keranique Volumizing Keratin Conditioner. Value = $3.75

1 oz. Glytone Mild Gel Wash. Value = $7.78

FULL SIZE Medicell Labs Redness Relief Hydrating Cream. Value = $60.00

The total value of of this BeautyFIX box is $222.86. This box has a fantastic value but it also contains some items for very specific issues. The four items I don't really have a need for are the Paula's choice acne product, the alterna foam to thicken hair and the redness relief hydrating cream and the SmartFX eye cream. Unfortunately those are the big ticket items. I know people that can use a couple of those items though. I am very happy with all the other items in the box and I still got my money's worth.

Verdict: This months box was full of full size products with a fantastic value.

August Graze Box - 8 Snack Pack

Graze sends out a box of four snack size containers of dried fruit, nuts, crackers, dip and dippers, etc.  The boxes are semi-customizable meaning you don't actually get to pick which items you want but you can rate the items you receive from love to never send me this again.  The cost of the box is $6.99 per shipment. You can also choose how often you want the boxes. I have mine set up for every four weeks.

I signed up for this box awhile ago and I'm still under the old pricing plan of $5.00 per shipment. I think it's super cool of them to keep me at the old rate. The price is why I keep this subscription.

I was checking my subscription online and noticed there was an option to receive a box of 8 snacks instead of 4. I decided this would be a better option for me so I switched to this plan and have it shipped every four weeks. I think this option becomes available after you get your first box.

Price: $6.99 per 4 pack shipment. This subscription ships to the US only, except Hawaii and Alaska.

The good:

Like Snacks: Are you a snacker like me?  These are perfectly proportioned snack size containers.

Nutritional info: The include nutritional info in each box. It's on the card in the package though, not the actual product.

Skip: You can do this online through your account and it's super easy.

Semi-customizable: You rate items and that's how they choose which items to send you.

The not so good:

Price: The costs ends up being $1.75 per package.  You're paying for convenience but I gotta be honest it was super convenient to pick up a pack and throw it in my lunch bag this morning.

Graze Box

Contents of box:

Salted Fudge & Peanut Cookie.

Summer Berry Flapjack.

Zesty Lime & Red Pepper Salsa.

Sesame Garlic Crunch.

Cinnamon Fig Roll.

Honey Drizzled Cashews.

Creamy Ranch Kern Pops.

Peachy Orchard.

Verdict: I'm really like my Graze boxes for convenient portable snacks.
