PopSugar Must Have - Special Edition Summer 2015

PopSugar Must Have Box always has a special edition summer box. Last years box didn't exactly wow me but, of course, that didn't stop me from buying the summer box this year. It's an addiction, I can't help myself. The price of the box was $100 but would contain well over $100 worth of goodies geared towards summer.
All of the special edition boxes comes in a black box and the items are wrapped in black tissue.

The un-boxing part one. Lots of fun treasures.

The un-boxing part 2. Paddles?

Un-boxing part 3. Holy cow! What a wonderful bag!

This is the inside of the bag. It's hard to tell but it's big and deep. You can easily fit a couple of beach towels in here with room to spare.

Contents of the PopSugar Special Edition Summer Box.

Sunnylife Beach Paddles in Bronte. Value = $26.00 - These look fun but honestly I don't know if I will actually use them.

Savannah Bee Company Honey for Cheese with dipper. Value = $7.50 - This is one my favorite brands of honey. I might save this for when my figs ripen.

Fringe Studio Vintage Love Anchors Glass Tray. Value = $16.00 -This is the cutest tray ever. I just love it!

Kendra Scott Ainsley Cuff Bracelet. Value = $120.00 - This is a really, really pretty cuff but it's just not my style. I know I will be able to trade this though.

Omorovieza Gold Shimmer Oil. Value = $80.00 - This has some serious gold shimmer in it. I can't wait to try it!

Baggu Weekend Bag in Sailor Stripe. Value = $74.00 - Holy moly this bag is big. It truly is a weekend bag and it couldn't be a better summer theme.

The total value of this Summer Special Edition Box is $323.50. I personally thought this box was great even though the high priced item wasn't my style. I know I will be able to trade or maybe even sell it for something else. The other item I'm not sure about is the paddles. They look fun but I just don't know that we will use them and we don't have kids to use them either. (The teenager graduated this week so she's like an adult now and stuff). Even so the other stuff if great. That weekend bag is awesome though. It's super durable and huge! I can't wait to try the gold shimmer oil, it looks super fun. And I adore the glass tray. I love the look, the saying all of it!

Verdict: This summer box was fantastic!

May Cricut Mystery Box

Cricut is a personal electronic cutting machine used in card making, scrapbooking, and crafting of all types. Cricut started selling mystery boxes which when they contain the cartridges are a terrific value! The cartridges that are needed to use the machine run anywhere from $20-$50 a piece. As you can see, adding to your collection of cartridges can add up quick.

The description said: The May Mystery box includes 4 cartridges any crafter will enjoy. The contents are a mystery, but they're a $139.96 value.

The price of this months Cricut mystery box was $29.99 with free shipping using code MAYSHIP. These are still available at Cricut if you're interested.

The first two carts. Straight from the Nest and Potions and Spells.

The second set of carts Summer Celebrations and Jubilee.

Contents of box with prices from the Cricut website listed.
The first price is the regular price and the second price is the sale price listed.

Cricut Straight from the Nest Cartridge. Value = $39.99/$23.99

Cricut Potions and Spells Cartridge. Value = $29.99

Cricut Summer Celebrations Cartridge. Value = $39.99/$19.99

Cricut Jubilee Cartridge. Value = $29.99/$19.99

The total value of this box is $139.96 or $93.96. I really think Cricut should calculate the value based on the current prices. Yes if you bought all of the carts at retail price it would equal the promised value, however on their own site the price is lower. It's still a great value with a $50 savings but it's misleading. Surprisingly I have over 70 cartridges and I had none of these. I thought I had the Jubilee one at first but as it turned out I didn't. One of these days I'll post a picture of some of my creations, but I have to make something first.

Verdict: If you are into Cricut and don't have a lot of cartridges the mystery boxes with cartridges in them is a great deal.

May Urth Box

The Urth Box tagline is "Discover a Healthier You". Well who doesn't want to do that?  Each month Urth Box sends a box of healthy full size snacks for you to try. They have different types and sizes of boxes the choose from. You can choose a gluten free, diet, classic or vegan box. From that point you choose which size box you want. They have a small box (7-10 items) for $29 a month, medium box (12-15 items) for $39 a month, large box (20-24 items) for $59 a month. Shipping to US is included. If you choose a 3 or 6 month plan you can save up to $10 a month.

This review is for the small box under a 6 month plan so the box cost me $19 a month.

Price: $29-$59 a month depending on size of box with discounts offered for 3 or 6 month subscriptions.

This box is available to US and Canada but extra shipping fees apply to Canada.

The Good:

Variety: They have a variety of boxes to choose from depending on your dietary needs.

Products: They send full size products which is awesome!

The Not So Good:

Price: The price is a little high for a monthly box.

Skip: It doesn't appear there any way to skip.

May Urth Box

Contents of the Urth Box:

1 oz. Sheila G Brownie Brittle in chocolate chip. Value = $0.95 - always delicious!

1 oz. Eat Real Quinoa Chips Sundried Tomato and Roasted Garlic. Value = $?? - These were actually pretty good.

TK Cool Mint Hibiscus Tea. Value = $??

1.5 oz. Sol Simple Organic Bananas. Value = $1.38

.33 oz. Crunchies Freeze Dried Mixed Fruit. Value = $1.51

Nud Fud Spirulina Banana Crisps. Value = $?? - just say no to spirulina. well you don't have to say no but I don't like it.

Fruigees Nothing Beets Cherry Fruit Snack. Value = $1.99

3 oz. 6350 Natural Foods Raspberry Fruit Strips. Value = $4.99 - I would totally buy these again.

1 oz. Pretzel Perfection Lemon Toffee Pretzel Sticks. Value = $1.99   - I'm undecided on these. kind of weird at first but kind of tasty.

1 oz. Qancha Corn Snacks. Value = $2.50

EVO Hemp Apple Pecan Bar for inflammatory health. Value = $2.25

The total value of this box is at least $17.56. There were 3 items that I couldn't find pricing on. If you add those items then the box is worth over $20 which is great.  All of these products except the brownie brittle were new to us which is great. So far the only thing I know I don't like is the spirulina. Since I had never tried that particular item/brand before I tried it and still didn't like it, but hey at least I tried it.

Verdict: This box had lots of new products for us to try.

O's Circle of Friends - Test and Keep Product

Back in October Oprah 2014 launched her new O's Circle of Friends subscription. The subscription has three levels of membership and each one offers a little something different. The basic membership is $39 the prime membership is $99 and the premier membership is $199. The prime membership has all the bell and whistles but it's also expensive. I debated on which one to sign up for but because Oprah has the magic touch when it comes to products I opted for the premier membership. I was intrigued by the "test (and keep!)" products component. Per their website the total value of the premier membership is $597.00

Yesterday I was excited and surprised to see an O's Circle of Friends box in my mailbox. Maybe things are looking up for this subscription.

The good:

Oprah: Pretty much everything associated with Oprah turns to gold.

Price: Three different price levels.

The not so good:

Value: So far I'm not seeing the value in the premier membership.

Inside the box was a card saying this is a test and keep product.

Inside the box.

Contents of the Test and Keep box:

AMLA  Legend 10-in-1 Silky Blow-Out Elixir. Value = $9.99

Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Collection 3-piece starter kit. Value = $26.00

The total value of this test and keep box is $35.99. I am super happy to get products like this. I am very much into trying new hair products and I use heat styling several times a week so these products are perfect for me!

Here are the items I've received so far with this subscription:
One year subscription to O Magazine print & digital. Value = $16.00

(2) Gift subscription to O Magazine. Value = $16.00/ea.

Keepsake Gift Box of luxury items. Value = $122.27

Surprise Gift (Sequin Bangle). Value = $28.00

Test (and keep) product (Tips and Toes Kit from Burt's Bees). Value = $13.00

O's Little Book of Happiness. Value = $17.99

GlossyBox Test and Keep Box. Value = $42.76

Test and Keep Box with hair products. Value = $35.99

The total value I have received is $308.01. By my calculations I should be getting more items totaling $288.99 coming my way in the next 5 months if they want to honor the $597 value promised.

Verdict: This is probably the most disappointing box I've ever subscribed to. I expected more or at the very least what was promised since it was associated with Oprah. I was excited about this delivery though so maybe things are looking up.

May French Box

French Box came out September of 2014 and at first it was great. After a few months they started having issues with their box and unhappy subscribers. Instead of shutting down they stopped shipping, re-grouped, re-vamped and came back improved. One of the big changes is now the box ships every other month instead of monthly. They guarantee at least 5 products in each box but not always beauty items. They charge your card about a week before the box ships and you can cancel anytime.

Price: $36 every 2 months.

This is available to the 48 states (sorry Alaska and Hawaii) and ships from Miami Florida.

The good:

Foreign Beauty: If you are into French items that you might not be able to easily find in the US then this box is fun.

Variety: Not just beauty products, there was also food and home goods in the box.

Packaging: The box everything arrives in is really cute and worth keeping.

The not so good:

Skip: There is no option to skip, only cancel and re-sign up.

Price: It's on the higher side but they value is definitely there.

This is the box hat all the treasures come in.

Inside the box is this card which is actually a postcard.

All the French Box treasures.

This is a piece of film made into a keychain.

An old postcard from France.

The back of the postcard.

Contents of the French Box

Fab & Co Perfumed Soap. Value = $8.00

Institute Karité Paris lip gloss in passion. Value = $18.95

.84 oz. Payot Pistachio Body Scrub. Value = $4.10

1 oz. Marilou Bio Organic Night Cream. Value = $5.40

Palme d'or Bookmark.Value = $8.90 - This is really pretty and I know I will use it.

35mm frame from a French film keychain. Value = $8.00 - This is actually kind of perfect for me since I used to work with film.

Authentic Riviera Postcard. Value = $10.00 - How strange for me to get this since I collect old postcards.

The total value of this new and improved French Box is $63.35. I wasn't super wow'd by this box but I wasn't disappointed either. Two items in the box that I think most people would be disappointed in were really perfect for me. The film keychain brings back a lot of memories because back in my early 20's I worked in a movie theater and one of my jobs was to put together movies from film reels. You don't see film much anymore since film has gone digital. The other item that was kind of a perfect fit for me was the postcard. Most people, I think wouldn't be interested in this but I happen to collect old postcards. I even have a website that I post them on, it hasn't been updated in a while but it's called Photo Reunions. I have to disagree with them on their pricing though. I can find old postcards for about a dollar in antique stores. As for the other stuff I will definitely use the soap and body scrub and I love the bookmark.

Verdict: I only paid $14 for this box so it was worth it for me. I don't think I will be subscribing though.

OuiPlease Box - Vol 1.3 Breath of Provence

If you haven't heard of OuiPlease it's one of the newest and much anticipated subscription box to hit the market. I think a big reason for all the chatter about the box is because of the price. The OuiPlease box ships 6 times a year and a single box is $175, a month-to-month subscription will run you $150 and a yearly subscription is $650. Per the OuiPlease website your special delivery will feature a surprise selection of products, including the very best France has to offer in beauty, jewelry, accessories, apparel, home and epicure.

Price: $108-$175 every two months depending on subscription commitment.

The Good:

Luxury products: The boxes are filled with name brands that would be considered luxurious.

Variety: This box isn't just beauty products. It will have jewelry, apparel, home goods, etc.

Information: They include their own magazine that talks about the products in the box as well as other products.

Pricing Structure: They offer one-time, monthly or yearly subscriptions. It would be nice to see a 6 month (3 box) subscription tier.

The Not So Good

Price: The price is way high but at the same time you will hopefully get what you pay for.

Referrals: I would like to see a referral program. If you can convince someone to spend this much money on a box you should get a little thank you treasure.

Each month the package comes with a French word on white paper. This one means discover.

Each box also comes with a note.

The inner box with a booklet that contains product info.

Here are all the treasures.

These are the earrings. They are super tiny but cute.

Contents of the Volume 1.3 OuiPlease Box:

Tassia Canellis earrings. Value = $44.00

Oliv' Radiance Elixir. Value = $50.00

Oliv' Beauty Oil. Value = $35.00

La Fare En Provence Shampoo. Value = $25.00

La Fare En Provence Succulent Foot Cream. Value = $15.00

Coeur de Cigale Shower Gel. Value = $25.00

Lanier Des Sens Verbena Hand Cream. Value = $15.00

Rose et Marius Melon and Basil Soap. Value = $15.00

Plantes et Parfums Lavender Flower Sachet. Value = $15.00

Epicerie de Provence Honey Candy. Value = $15.00

Panier des Sens Honey Liquid Soap. Value = $20.00

Sothys lipstick. Value = $25.00

The value of this second box is $299.00. I'm actually wondering if I'm missing something from this box. They promised value of their boxes are $400 and I noticed a lot of people received a jewelry item from Eloise Fiorentino. I hate to complain though because the value is still fantastic and I like all the items in the box. I decided to send them an email asking if something was missing from my box and letting them know my shampoo had leaked. It wasn't a big leak and only leaked onto the soap but I thought they should know anyway. The sent a response back saying "We apologize that your experience has not been flawless and we would love to make it up to you. We will be sending a gift your way! Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery" I'm very curious what they are going to send.

I can't believe how expensive the foot cream is. It's not a very big jar and I would say I could get maybe 4 uses out of it, so $15 is kind of a lot. Same for the little square of soap. It will last longer but it's still pretty small for $15. I wish I received a different color Sothys lip color but maybe I can trade it. The little sachet of french lavender will be stashed in my closed to keep it smelling nice. The Tassia Canellis earrings are really cute but super tiny!

Verdict: It's a lot of money but it definitely has value and some very cool French items in it.

May Allure Sample Society Box

The Allure Sample Society beauty box is a monthly service for beauty products that promises 5 fresh deluxe sized samples from luxury brands designed for multiple uses.  You also receive a coupon each month for $15 off a $50 purchase from Beauty Bar and a 12 month subscription to Allure magazine.  The cost for this subscription is $15.00 a month with shipping included.

Price: $15.00 a month with no option to skip.

The good:

The samples: You get deluxe sized samples from luxury brands.

Magazine: You get a free 12 month subscription to Allure magazine.  If you already subscribe they will extend your subscription and if you don't want it you can mail in a form for a refund on the value ($12)

Coupon: They send you a coupon with each box for $15 off a $50 purchase. The catch is your order has to include at least one item from a brand you received that month.  It doesn't have to be the item you received just the same brand.

Referrals: It's a win/win. You get a $5 credit on your account or you can donate that to charity and the person you refer gets a 20% discount on their first purchase at Beauty Bar.

The not so good:

Skip a month: There is no option to skip a month, only cancel.

Contents of box with approximate retail value.

1 oz. John Frieda 7 Day Volume In-Shower Treatment. Value = $2.50

.1 oz. Julep Lip Gloss in Graceful. Value = $8.00/$6.40 for Julep Mavens

.17 oz. Versace Eros Pour Femme. Value = $9.20

1.76 oz. Avéne Spring Water. Value = $9.29

.6 oz. Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. Value = $5.75

.85 oz. Alterna Caviar Multi-Vitamin Heat Protection Spray. Value = $6.07

The total value of this box is $40.81. This value is more like what I'm used to from Allure. Last month was terrible but this made up for it. I'm loving both hair care items, I can't wait to try them. We have a long international trip this summer (yep, I'll be offline for a few weeks this summer) so I'm packing the spring water in my carry on. Long flights are very drying and a little splash of water goes a long way. The Julep lip gloss is a great size but a little too pink for me. I'll be trading this one. The sleep mask looks interesting. It says to use toner and emulsion then apply mask and leave it on until morning. It's worth a try.

Verdict: This box was fantastic for me.

O's Circle of Friends - Test and Keep

Back in October Oprah 2014 launched her new O's Circle of Friends subscription. The subscription has three levels of membership and each one offers a little something different. The basic membership is $39 the prime membership is $99 and the premier membership is $199. The prime membership has all the bell and whistles but it's also expensive. I debated on which one to sign up for but because Oprah has the magic touch when it comes to products I opted for the premier membership. I was intrigued by the "test (and keep!)" products component. The total value of the premier membership is $597.00

I received a GlossyBox package in the mail yesterday which I thought was odd. When I opened the box it had a sticker on it that said it was from O's Circle of Friends and it was test and keep products.

The good:

Oprah: Pretty much everything associated with Oprah turns to gold.

Price: Three different price levels.

The not so good:

Value: So far I'm not seeing the value in the premier membership.

To recap these are the promised value of each membership level.

This is the GlossyBox with the Circle of Friends sticker.

Inside the GlossyBox.

Contents of the Test and Keep GlossyBox products:

2.6 oz. Bvlgari eau Parfumée au Thé Blanc Soap. Value = $15.00

.67 oz. Kneipp Herbal Bath in Lavender. Value = $5.50

.17 oz. Skin&Co. Roma Truffle Therapy Serum. Value = $9.66

.5 oz. Royal Apothem Cream Créme. Value = $5.60

Kocostar Hair Therapy. Value = $7.00

The total value of this test and keep box is $42.76. I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand I'm excited about the products because they are all something I will use. On the other hand these are all items I've received from GlossyBox so it seems these are perhaps leftovers from other Glossyboxes rather than items picked by Oprah peeps.

By my calculations I should be getting more items totaling $324.98 coming my way in the next 5 months if they want to honor the $597 value promised.

Verdict: This is probably the most disappointing box I've ever subscribed to. I expected more or at the very least what was promised since it was associated with Oprah.

May Graze box - 8 snack pack

Graze sends out a box of four snack size containers of dried fruit, nuts, crackers, dip and dippers, etc.  The boxes are semi-customizable meaning you don't actually get to pick which items you want but you can rate the items you receive from love to never send me this again.  The cost of the box is $6.99 per shipment. You can also choose how often you want the boxes. I have mine set up for every four weeks.

I signed up for this box awhile ago and I'm still under the old pricing plan of $5.00 per shipment. I think it's super cool of them to keep me at the old rate. The price is why I keep this subscription.

I was checking my subscription online and noticed there was an option to receive a box of 8 snacks instead of 4. I decided this would be a better option for me so I switched to this plan and have it shipped every four weeks. I think this option becomes available after you get your first box.

Price: $6.99 per 4 pack shipment. This subscription ships to the US only, except Hawaii and Alaska.

The good:

Like Snacks: Are you a snacker like me?  These are perfectly proportioned snack size containers.

Nutritional info: The include nutritional info in each box. It's on the card in the package though, not the actual product.

Skip: You can do this online through your account and it's super easy.

Semi-customizable: You rate items and that's how they choose which items to send you.

The not so good:

Price: The costs ends up being $1.75 per package.  You're paying for convenience but I gotta be honest it was super convenient to pick up a pack and throw it in my lunch bag this morning.

All 8 snacks and I'm super excited about the Thai Tom Yum soup!!

Contents of box:

Oven Roasted Salt & Vinegar Nut Selection, salt and vinegar almonds and peanuts.

Tropical Dacquiri, pineapple, green mango and lime infused raisins.

Thai Sweet Chili Bites, sweet chili sauce with baked soy bites.

Original 3 Seed Protein Flapjack, rolled rustic oak flapjack with flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Iced Cinnamon Bun, cinnamon and honey almonds, yogurt coated sunflower seeds and vanilla cookie drops.

Strawberries & Cream Granola Yogurt Topper, oat and barley granola, yogurt coated strawberry pieces and freeze dried strawberry pieces.

Thai Tom Yum Soup, spicy tom yum soup with aromatic lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves served with zucchini, red pepper and rice noodles.

Hickory Smoked BBQ, bbq peas, corn nuts and smoked cashews

I had been hoping the tom yum soup would make an appearance in my box soon. They are a few different varieties to try. The Tom Yum was good but a little spicy

Verdict: I'm really like my Graze boxes for convenient portable snacks.

May Birchbox - Cupcakes and Cashmere

Birchbox is a monthly subscription service for beauty items like makeup, skincare, fragrance, etc.  Each month you will receive 4-5 generously sized samples and sometimes full size beauty products.  The cost of this service is $10 w/shipping included.  They also have a yearly subscription which is $110 for the year bringing the cost down to $9.16 a month.

Price: $10 a month or $110 a year pre-paid.

This subscription is available in the US only.

The good:

Name Brands.  You will receive items from Benefit, Stila, Pür, Essie, Kerastase, Tarte, etc.

Cost.  For $10 you can give yourself a little beauty treat.

Like surprises?  You don't know what's in your box until you receive it.  When you sign up you take a little quiz and the items in the box are supposed to be customized to you.  I have seen pictures of other peoples boxes and they do receive different items.

Discounts: They have a system where you earn points for referrals and things you buy.  The points allow you to receive discounts on future full size purchases from their shop.  They offer free shipping on items from the monthly box and a $5 flat shipping rate for items that don't qualify for free shipping.  This is a nice feature because if you want to order several different brands you get free or $5 shipping for everything.

Need a gift? You can gift a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription or you can purchase a gift card in any amount.  There also have a nice option with the gift subscriptions where you can choose to have the 1st box shipped you for giving and subsequent boxes will be shipped directly to the recipient.  Great birthday/holiday gift!

The not so good:

Skip a month?  Currently there is no option to skip a month only cancel.

April Birchbox Cupcakes & Cashmere box.

Contents of box with approximate retail price/value listed.

.08 oz. Coastal Scents Revealed 3 eyeshadow quad. Value = $4.00

.05 oz. Harvey Prince Yogini perfume. Value = $4.44

.1 oz. Macadamia Nourishing Moisture Oil. Value = $9.52

.24 oz. Marcelle Hydra-C Energizing Hydrating Gel. Value = $3.43

.16 Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Primer Water. Value = $1.33

The total value of this box is $22.72. I'm not sure why this box has a cupcakes & cashmere theme other than that's the name of the curators book. None of these items say cupcakes or cashmere to me, however I am happy with the items. I'm a fan of the macadamia oil. I use it a few times a week on my hair and I know it really does work. The eyeshadow colors are really pretty and compliment each other nicely. It's a great size for traveling also. I'm going to try the photo finish primer this weekend. We are getting all dressed up and attending a soirée/ball. I'll have to break out all of my finest beauty products.

The verdict: This box was just about perfect for me.

Do you love cooking with new foods and spices? Then you have to check out RawSpiceBar. Each month you will receive 3-4 whole spices or spice blends along with a recipe to use them. Each recipe will use the include spice and will make 8-10 servings. The price of this subscription is just $6.00 a month with shipping included. You have to sign up for a minimum 3 month subscription.

Price: $6.00 a month (minimum 3 month subscription) w/ shipping included. Discounts for 6 and 12 month subscriptions. Ships to US and Canada.

The good:

Love to cook: If you love cooking with new foods and spices this a fun way to do it.

Know someone who loves to cook: This makes a great gift!

Price: $6 is a great low price.

Reduce waste: It's such a terrible thing to buy a jar of spice and have it go to waste. This allows you to try the spice without buying a whole jar.

The not so good:

Skip: I don't see an option to skip or pause your subscription.

Buy: I really want them to have a shop on their website where you can purchase more spices you like.

Inside the shipping envelope is another envelope with the spices.

April RawSpiceBar - The Andes, Peru

Contents of the RawSpiceBar envelope:

.4 oz. packet Peruvian Spice Rub.

.4 oz. packet Aji Amarillo Spices.

.3 oz. packet Pink Peppercorn Blend.

One of the best parts of this subscription is the included recipes. They include ingredients that are easily found at the grocery store. Although I will say one of the recipes calls for a 6 lb. chicken and I don't think I've ever seen a 6 lb. chicken. That's a BIG chicken.

The recipes are:

Roasted Aji Amarillo Sweet Potato Wedges.
Pink Peppercorn & Sea Salt Voladores.
Peruvian Spiced Roasted Chicken.

Verdict: I think this is a great subscription and I'm really enjoying the new spices.

Allure Beauty Thrills Box - Summer

The Allure Beauty Boxes are PACKED with tons of stuff for a low price. The products range from drug store to salon products and are a great deal.

The Allure boxes are seasonal and this summer box was priced eat $44.95 plus $10 shipping for a total of $54.95. I live in California so total with taxes was $58.32. The also tell you what's in the box before you buy so you know what you're getting. Basically if there is $60 worth of products you will use it's totally worth it. This box said it was valued at over $200!

In addition they always donate some money from each purchase to a charity. This time Allure donated $5 from each box to NYU Langone Medical Center to benefit Melanoma Research.

There are lots of items in the box that I've been wanting to try like the Bioré charcoal pore minimizing stuff. There was lots of useful items like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. While those things aren't exciting they are useful and I would have to buy them anyway.

Verdict: Keep and eye out when these boxes go on sale. They are a tremendous value!
