January Birchbox - Let's Do This

Birchbox is a monthly subscription service for beauty items like makeup, skincare, fragrance, etc.  Each month you will receive 4-5 generously sized samples and sometimes full size beauty products.  The cost of this service is $10 w/shipping included.  They also have a yearly subscription which is $110 for the year bringing the cost down to $9.16 a month. I had canceled this subscription last year because I didn't like what they were sending me. A friend signed up and was getting some pretty cool items so I decided to sign up again.

Price: $10 a month or $110 a year pre-paid.

This subscription is available in the US only.

The good:

Name Brands.  You will receive items from Benefit, Stila, Pür, Essie, Kerastase, Tarte, etc.

Cost.  For $10 you can give yourself a little beauty treat.

Like surprises?  You don't know what's in your box until you receive it.  When you sign up you take a little quiz and the items in the box are supposed to be customized to you.  I have seen pictures of other peoples boxes and they do receive different items.

Discounts: They have a system where you earn points for referrals and things you buy.  The points allow you to receive discounts on future full size purchases from their shop.  They offer free shipping on items from the monthly box and a $5 flat shipping rate for items that don't qualify for free shipping.  This is a nice feature because if you want to order several different brands you get free or $5 shipping for everything.

Need a gift? You can gift a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription or you can purchase a gift card in any amount.  There also have a nice option with the gift subscriptions where you can choose to have the 1st box shipped you for giving and subsequent boxes will be shipped directly to the recipient.  Great birthday/holiday gift!

The not so good:

Skip a month?  Currently there is no option to skip a month only cancel.

January Birchbox

Contents of box with approximate retail price/value listed.

.2 oz. Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF45+. Value = $5.20

1.5 oz. Essential Elements Wake Up Rosemary Body Lotion. Value = $3.56 - This really smells like rosemary. I could smell it when I opened the box. Good thing I like rosemary.

2 ml Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume. Value = $3.60 - This is 100% cetalox which is usually used as a back note in perfumery. It's a an ok scent, not too overpowering but not something I liked too much.

1 oz. Number 4 Hair Care Non-Aerosol Hairspray. Value = $4.50

.024 oz. Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner in in New Delhi Chai. Value = $4.40

The total value of this box is $21.26. This has a nice mix of items and I'll use all of it. Usually I'm not to into the face products but I tried a little of this type of product the other day and it was nice. It covered up some pigment issues without feeling heavy. The little hairsprays are great for traveling or keeping at work. Same for the little eyeliner. I actually like smaller eyeliners because I like to switch up colors and sometimes it takes too long to get through a whole pencil. I'm curious when I try the body lotion if I'm going to smell like roast chicken all day. Rosemary always reminds me of roast chicken.

The verdict: This months box was ok in value but had products I will for sure use.

  1. One of my boxes is exactly what you received. Mine hasn't arrived yet. Can you tell me, is the BB cream tinted? I'm just a shade over Elmer's Glue (Fair in BB quiz terms, translucent according to anyone who knows me).

    1. "shade over elmer's glue" that made me laugh. But yes the BB cream is tinted and probably won't work for your skin color.
