September Gourmet Spotting Box

Gourmet Spotting is just what the name implies.  It's gourmet food sent to you discovered by the owners during their travels.  One of the tag lines of Gourmet Spotting is "Discover the world from your kitchen" Love it!  They send the best gourmet products from around the world, every month to your doorstep. For $37.94 a month (the box is $29.99 plus $7.95 shipping) you will receive a box of 4 to 6 medium to full sized hand-picked gourmet products.  In addition to sending you a box of delicious treasures they also donate a meal to charity for every box they ship.  You know I'm a big fan of the meal donations so this made me very happy.

I had actually canceled this box but this was sent to me free since my July box arrange damaged and sticky with syrup. If this box is as good as last months I may have to re-subscribe.

This subscription box ships to the US only.

The good:

Gourmet food: Love gourmet food then you will love this.

Price: Great price to be able to try thing that aren't readily available at your local store.

Pay it Forward: They donate a meal for every box sent.

Sizes: Not just little sample sizes.  This is enough for everyone or you can keep it all for yourself.

Information: The send a flyer (printed on nice heavy card stock) with information on all the products.

Need a gift: You can save some money on 3, 6 or 12 month gift plans.

The not so good:

Skip: The is no option to skip a month, only cancel.

Value: The values vary from great to not so great.

Contents of box with approximate retail price listed:

Valencianos sea salt artisanal crackers from Spain. Value = $1.98

Village Gourmet Hot Parmesan & Artichoke Dip from Canada. Value = $3.99

Crum Creek Soy Bites Breadsticks from the USA. Value = $0.50 - these are ok, would be better with mustard but I was too lazy to walk to the fridge. Had a nice garlic flavor.

Maestri Radiatori tri-color pasta from Italy. Value = $3.99

Campisi Pachino Cherry Tomato Sauce from Sicily. Value = $4.50

Lark Fine Foods whole grain Lady Birds from Massachusetts. Value = $6.00 - I prefer soft cookies and these are hard but they had a good flavor and lots of yummy chunks.

The value of this box is at least $20.96. The value of this box was pretty low but I did like the products. I always love seeing colored pastas, they look so pretty and happy and I love how huge these are. I think I might make the recipe for the hot artichoke crab dip that is on the product package and hey I can use the crackers for dipping. I've never seen tomato sauce like this before. The bottle says to cook some garlic in olive oil and add this to it. It's a pretty small bottle but I wonder if since it's cherry tomatoes is the flavor more concentrated.

Verdict: I'm torn on this one. I added up the value of the last 11 months vs. the cost and it was a difference of $29.40 (mean I paid $29.40 more than I got in product). That's not bad considering some of the items are hard to find and you would have to pay shipping which I'm sure would total more than $30 and they donate a meal for each box. Decisions, decisions....
