July Gourmet Spotting

Gourmet Spotting is just what the name implies.  It's gourmet food sent to you discovered by the owners during their travels.  One of the tag lines of Gourmet Spotting is "Discover the world from your kitchen" Love it!  They send the best gourmet products from around the world, every month to your doorstep. For $37.94 a month (the box is $29.99 plus $7.95 shipping) you will receive a box of 4 to 6 medium to full sized hand-picked gourmet products.  In addition to sending you a box of delicious treasures they also donate a meal to charity for every box they ship.  You know I'm a big fan of the meal donations so this made me very happy.

My box arrived in a black garbage bag which I thought was odd. When I opened it I discovered why. The ginger syrup broke in transit and had completely leaked out and all over everything. It was a gigantic sticky mess. I managed to wash everything off but there was no hope for the ginger syrup. Also the pretzel bag had popped open on the side perhaps in shipment. The contents seemed fine. I contacted the company and they are sending me another box to makeup for gooey syrup mess. I'm happy with that.

This subscription box ships to the US only and ships from New York, NY.

The good:

Gourmet food: Love gourmet food then you will love this.

Price: Great price to be able to try thing that aren't readily available at your local store.

Pay it Forward: They donate a meal for every box sent.

Sizes: Not just little sample sizes.  This is enough for everyone or you can keep it all for yourself.

Information: The send a flyer (printed on nice heavy card stock) with information on all the products.

Need a gift: They will send a custom message on a 1,3,6 or 12 month gift box.

The not so good:

Skip: The is no option to skip a month, only cancel.

Gourmet Spotting box with my missing ginger syrup

Contents of box with approximate retail price listed:

East Shore Sweet and Tangy Mustard from Wisconsin, USA. Value = $3.50

East Shore Pretzels from Wisconsin. Value = $3.50

1.6 oz. Global Bazzar Coffee and Chocolate Sauce from Brazil. Value = ??

1.6 oz. Global Bazzar Bananada Creamy Banana Dessert Sauce from Brazil. Value = ??

12 oz. Organic Black Beluga Lentils from Goldmine, USA. Value = $4.27

Organic Ginger Syrup from California, USA. Value = $12.50

The value of this box is at least $24.00. I couldn't find anything on the dessert sauces because they aren't available in the US. I would add another $8 give or take for those. That would make this box value about $32.00 give or take. I made the included recipe for Ragout of Beluga Lentils and I have to say it was delicious! I would make that again for sure. I'm thinking or rather hoping I will get inspired this weekend and make homemade ice cream to put the sauces on.

Verdict: I'm thinking about canceling this one. I haven't been super excited about this box since the May one.

  1. I was thinking about subscribing, but the boxes do not seem to be getting better. I think the best one was the one with the really good pasta. Maybe I'll do taste trunk instead.

    1. I went with the gourmet taste trunk box and really liked it. I ended up canceling this one which was kind of sad becaue I really liked it in the beginning.
