April Julibox

Julibox is a subscription box for those who like the beverages of the adult variety. Each month Julibox sends out a recipes for two different cocktails and all the ingredients necessary to make them (minus any fresh fruit).  Each cocktail will be enough to serve two people so basically you get four cocktails per box.  Julibox cost $40 if you do a month to month membership and can go as low as $36 a month if you sign up for a 6 month membership.  Shipping is included in all prices.  The nice thing about the 3, 6 or 2 month memberships is they don't bill you in advance they still be you once a month.  I signed up for a 6 month subscription and this is my third box.

They say you can buy more of anything you like in their shop but when I clicked on their store page the only thing for sale were some older boxes which were all sold out.

This subscription only ships in the US and only to certain states that don't have restrictions on alcohol shipments.  The package ships from Brooklyn, New York via UPS and requires adult of 21 years or older to sign.

The good:

Like new drinks: This is a great way to try new drinks without buying a full size bottle of alcohol.

Need a gift: You can gift Julibox. What a better way to say thanks than with a cocktail.

Monthly billing: I like that if you sign up for 3 months or longer they still bill you monthly.  If you cancel before the end of the subscription term they will charge you $15.00 This seems like a fair deal to me.

The not so good:

Price: The price ends up being $9-$10 per drink which is right around regular bar prices.  The benefit is you can drink in the comfort of your own home.

This months theme is "Kentucky Derby"

Cocktail #1 Mint Julep

200 ml bottle of Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Value = $8.79

2 Mint Julep Straws. Value = $2.00/ea. ??

The total value of this cocktail is $4.40 per drink.

Cocktail #2 Orange Basil Smash

(2) 50 ml bottle of Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Value = $4.39/ea.

50 ml bottle of Canton Ginger Liqueur. Value = $3.99

The total value of this cocktail is $6.39 per drink.

The total value in this box is $25.58 including the Julep straws.  I didn't include them in the price of cocktail because you can make a julep without the straw. Originally Julibox sent Society Fair Thrasher's mint syrup but it turned into a hot mess so it wasn't usable. Basically they didn't know making small batches of the syrup would cause issue with the stability so when we received the bottle they had leaked. They send a modified recipe via email using just sugar and mint. I had a mint julep once at one of Emeril's restaurants in New Orleans and I was not a fan. It was way too strong for me. I am curious about this bourbon though cause I keep hearing good things about it. The orange basil smash drinks sounds interesting. I don't think I've ever tried ginger liqueur before.

**5-15-13** I just realized that they credited my account $5 which was deducted from my May box to make up for the issues with this box***
Verdict: This value was a little low but they had some unforeseen issues with one of the mixers.

  1. You are so nice! I would have gotten annoyed and requested a refund or something. [Or maybe I am just mean :P] I was actually thinking about getting this subscription but the value seems kind of low. Plus where I work [the perks of living in a big city!] and close to where I live is a liquor store, although a tiny one.

    1. They were pretty apologetic in their email so I let it go. I'm torn on this one because the value is lower than what I would pay for a drink but it's all about convenience. It is nice to have everything ready to make a single drink without having to buy full bottles or figure out what to make.

    2. I just noticed that I had a $5 credit in my account. I had missed the email that said they were giving people a credit to make up for the snafu in this box. That was nice of them

  2. OH that's cool! :) At least they made amends :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was thinking of getting the subscription for my dad but then its like even it doesn't taste good, he will still drink the liquor :)
