Homemint Mystery Box - July

Homemint is a relatively new monthly service geared towards your home.  Homemint is a collaboration between Justin Timberlake and designer Estee Stanley and is part of the Beachmint family that includes, Jewelmint, Stylemint, Shoemint, Beautymint and Intimint.  I had no idea Justin Timberlake was into home decorating, of course I don't know much about him.  I can tell you when I think home about home design Justin Timberlake has never come to mind.  I've been buying Jewelmint items for awhile now but have never tried any of the other mints.  I signed up to received the Homemint emails but I found their prices (member and non-member) to be outrageously expensive so I never joined.  To join you pay $9.99 a month but receive that back in a credit that you can use to purchase items from the website.    This month though they sent out an email for their first mystery box.  You know I'm a sucker for the mystery boxes.  The price for the mystery box was $39.99 for members and $59.99 for non-members and you could order up to 3 boxes.  They also charged shipping which made my total about $148 for 3 mystery boxes.  They promised each box would contain at least 2 items with a $70 value and could contain up to 10 items.  I went ahead and signed up for the membership and ordered 3 boxes.  What's the worse that could happen?

I received two large boxes, via Fed-Ex.  The boxes contained a total of 6 items.  This means I received the minimum they promised of 2 items for each mystery box.  They didn't break down what came in each order so I have no idea how they grouped them.  I grouped them myself to figure out how they came up to the minimum of $70.

All 3 orders together.

Items with member price and non-member price as listed on website.

1st order.

Large Hand-Woven Moroccan Basket made with sustainable grasses and leather handles. $47.99/$99.99 - used this to take a picnic in.  It held two bottles of wine, some containers of fruit, cheese, crackers and a towel.  Very sturdy.
Medium 6" x 5 3/4" Portugal Terracotta Planter in blue. $12.99/$16.99

The total value for this order is $60.98 or $116.98

2nd order.

20x24 down feather fill Red Bohemian Paisley Pillow. $39.99/$54.99
Small 10" diameter made in Mexico black Galapagos deep banded bowl. $19.99/$25.99 - my cat as decided this makes a wonderful bed.  She can curl up nicely in it and the black band matches her black fur.

The total value for this order is $59.98 or $80.98

3rd order

18x18 Nubby Silk Pillow, silk in front, linen in back with down feather fill. $39.99/$54.99
18x18 100% linen with down feather fill Green Maze Pillow. $39.99/$54.99

The total value for this order is $79.98 or $109.80

Looking at the total I'm guessing they calculated the value based on the non-member price.  I still think their items are way over priced.  The Moroccan basket is super cute but $100, even $48 is a little pricey.  I've purchased baskets from Serrv which is a fair trade company for a lot less and they were just a cute. Side note - I highly recommend Serrv, they are a non-profit fair trade organization that sells handmade items from low-income artisans and farmers. The products are terrific and it's a great cause. The pillows and planter are pretty accurately priced at the member prices.  The bowl isn't too bad at $19.99 but I know I could find something similar for less somewhere like World Market or Serrv.

I looked around the Internet for similar items and really if I would've shopped for these items on my own I would've spent about the same and would've bought pillows that actually matched my decor.  I realize it was a mystery bag so I took a chance on the colors of the items I would be receiving so I'm not complaining about that.  All in all I'll keep a few items and a couple will be given as gifts. Homemint has another mystery box promo going right now for a European mystery box.  The price is $59.99 for members and $89.99 for non-members.  Again they promise at least 2 items and up to 15 for a minimum $90 value.  They tell you which items the boxes may include so if you like all of those items it could be worth it.

Verdict: I won't be buying another mystery box from Homemint.  Too much money to gamble.

I am not any type of sponsor paid or unpaid for Homemint. I purchase these items myself.

  1. Eh, not impressed and none of that would go with anything I own. We have a Post Victorian house so a lot of old furniture, sure, but nothing that would go with these things. Bummer! I did a random box (three actually) with MamaBargains.com and they all stank except for maybe two items out of the 9 or 10 items we received. Such a shame!

For the mom random box (AKA mystery box; can't choose anything and it's completely random) I got a size Small pair of capris and an itty bitty nursing bra (size A). Um... I'm a big busty gal, LOL! Hopefully I can find someone else to take these things off my hands but for now I'm stuck with them.

  2. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all those pillows because the don't really match anything in my house either. They are well made though and the bohemian pillow is actually stuffed very nicely.
I'm surprised they sent clothes in the mom box, unless it's a t-shirt you really are taking a shot in the dark.

  3. Were you hoping for something in particular? I ordered one of the first mystery boxes and was excited to get the cutting board, the small cozumel bowl and the Green Maize Pillow. Getting the cutting board actually made me go ahead and get the European Mystery box in hopes of what I might get. Great review!

    1. Thanks! I was actually hoping to get the cutting board only because it looked so pretty and I love to cook. Good for you for getting that. Have you received your European box yet? I'm curious what's in that one.

    2. I haven't gotten the European mystery box yet. I will definitely check back in once I get it and let you know how I fared!!

    3. Got it today. It was a huge disappointment. I'll actually be complaining because as a member I could have bought the items cheaper! I got the two white Tarascon salad plates and the linen dish towel by Brahms Mount. Who needs 2 salad plates? Huge thumbs down!

    4. wow, that's terrible. As I recall the non-memebr price was $89.99. I don't think two plates and a dish towel is worth the member or non-member price. I hope they make it right for you.

    5. They are going to send a third item...and according to what other people have gotten it looks like I'm not the only one disappointed. I'll let you know what I get as my 3rd mystery item!

    7. Got my third item yesterday. I received two of the Tarascon mugs. Ehh. That's alright, but for a dish towel, a set of two plates and two mugs it was 74 with shipping. Not worth it. And I had an order in for one of the Lindy Linen pillows to which they sent me the wrong color and exchanged it and put it on my card without my approval....to which they didn't apply the 30% and 10 dollar discount I had originally used. Total thumbs down.

    8. You're right that's way not worth it. I don't think this mint venture is going to do to well. The items are overpriced and they just can't seem to get it right.

  4. I too got the salad plates and dish towel and I am waiting to see if they respond to my e-mail. I think it was disgusting that they sent so little!

    1. I agree. I'm the one that responded above about it. I think they're getting a lot of negative comments about that. If they were going to send such dinky items, there should have been a 3rd item.

    2. Did they ever respond to your e-mail? Did they offer to send a 3rd item?

  5. I like the items you received but not sure about the value - since you paid $40 per box and received 2 items each, it comes out to maybe $20 per item? Just wondering if you (or anyone else who reads this blog) has ever thought of putting these online somewhere and swapping/selling them? I'd love a couple of them! ;)

    1. The value listed is what the company values them at if you bought them from their website. You are correct though if I broke it down my piece based on what I paid then it would be $20 each. I did think about selling the pillows but thought the shipping would be cost prohibitive. My cat has decided the banded bowl is a great place to nap so I guess I'm keeping that also. If you want to email me (the contact me at the top) and let me know what you're interested in I can look up how much shipping would be.

  6. I wish I would have read this yesterday. Received my box. Not sure if it's complete but received 2 candles and a beach towel?!

    1. I haven't heard of anyone getting those items yet. That was from the European mystery box? I think they value the candles at $25 and the towel at $50 on their website. I love mystery box items but the Homemint ones seem to be a dud.

  7. I've posted a few times about previous boxes (I've ordered one of each) and didn't actually believe they were sending out all the items to anyone until I got my mystery box(es) today with 11 items and over 1500 worth of items. I'll run down my first two boxes and then what I got in this box which I was hesitant to order but so glad I did!

Box 1 (first mystery box) - the smaller of the two cutting boards, green maize pillow, Cozumel shallow band black basket
Box 2 (european mystery box) - fail. A dish towel and two white salad plates followed by two Tarascon stripe mugs after a complaint that it was horrible
Box 3 (Justin and Estees mystery box) - win. Two NYC (uptown and downtown) Framed photographs signed by JT, Laguna black floor pillow, white queen pillow cases montecito bay linen and coordinating white queen fitted and flat sheet in white linen, large homestead basket, large blonde hickory cutting board, 3 different scents from the homemint candle collection that smell awesome.

I just didn't believe they were sending people all the items and that I'd ever get lucky so I wanted to let others know its possible. I doubt luck will strike again for me but I may take another chance at the next box. I'm going through some tough life situations right now and these surprises cheer me up! Hope others are getting good items also.

    1. Wow that third box is awesome! Good for you. I wonder if they did that because you complained about the second box? Either way that's an awesome score.
